'Re-evaluate your time' How often do you do voluntary work? It should be part of your life thinking about doing good for society and the deprived. 🙏 ❤️ 🐝

Last weekend I spoke on the marketing panel at Effective Altruism Global; what an honor to be surrounded by literally 1,000+ people wanting to make the world a better place. It's one of the best weekends each year, and reaffirms my commitment to donate 10% of my salary (I'm actually shooting for 12% this year); do you want to pledge to donate? GivingWhatWeCan.org

@kyliebouch just gave $11k to @oxfamaustralia. Not because she can afford it, but because someone has to do something about poverty. She’s amazing. @thelifeyoucansave. #effectivealtruism #utilitarianethics

{#NoIneffectiveAltruism Day 6} “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”
•
•
•
It’s a simple old saying worth remembering. So many charitable campaigns end up being about collecting and giving out items. And granted, there are situations where there is such an immediate need for food that this helps to save lives. But for people living in “everyday poverty,” what is much more useful is thinking about whether your intervention has a long-term, self-renewing impact.
•
•
•
If you build a well, you must teach the locals how to maintain it, or else it will deteriorate. If you work to heal cataracts, you should train local doctors too, or else the illness will strike someone else. If you teach a woman to read, you should equip her to teach others, so that the intervention can magnify its impact over time. •
•
•
I teach so I’m biased but really, education is so important. It is one of the only things which even in the depths of severe poverty, can never be taken away from us. It only has to be given ONCE, and it lasts forever. This makes it the most meaningful and effective thing you can give another person. Give to charities that teach. •

'Who wants to do Good?' I often come across this very important question. My answer to it is that naturally every human being wants to do good for his/her family 👪👨‍👨‍👧‍👦👩‍👩‍👧‍👦community 👨‍👦👩‍👦👩‍👧‍👦👩‍👩‍👧‍👦👨‍👩‍👧‍👦👨‍👨‍👧‍👧or even the world population🌎. However, not everybody learns how to care for others. Not everybody is interested in caring for others. What do you think is the reason for that? Do you want to do Good? I'd love to hear some of your opinions, many thanks 🙏 ❤️ 🐝

The Christmas season is a good opportunity to look beyond your own nose. While "Complete Food" is revolutionizing our eating habits, the "Effective Altruism" movement redefines how we help others.

Effective Altruism briefly explained:
Most forms of do-gooding start out with a What (“I want to promote microfinance!”), move to a How (“maybe I should do a sponsored marathon?”) and simply take the Why for granted
(“because of course microfinance is good!”).
Effective altruism, in contrast, starts with a Why and a How, and lets them determine the What.

Our brain is otherwise too easily tempted by romanticized stories rather than supporting things that actually make a difference.
The basic assumption behind it is simple: Helping more is better than helping less.

So if I want to donate to help others, how can I be sure that my money will make a difference? And where can I use it to help as many and much as possible?

The same question was asked by the founders of GiveWell.
The process of looking at evidence of different interventions and their cost-effectiveness has led to a small list of "top charities" that they recommend. Often, even with the most conservative and skeptical estimates, these charities are many times better than traditional charities.
"Make your dollar go further" - you do not necessarily have to donate more, but where you donate to can make a gigantic difference.

Not only people need help:
The equivalent of GiveWell for helping animals is called Animal Charity Evaluators.

Of course, time can also be used in different ways and most of our lives we work in a profession.

The organization 80,000 Hours (the number of hours an average person works) has researched exactly how we can do as much good as possible with our careers.

We all have the potential to make the world a better place tomorrow than it is today!

{#NoIneffectiveAltruism Day 5} IMPACTS, NOT NUMBERS. In the last topic I mentioned that just because a charity is good at marketing itself doesn’t mean it’s effective. This is also true for how charities choose to report their accomplishments. Charities can easily make themselves sound great without actually producing value for their recipients. Here are some examples of what I mean:
•
•
•
1. “We donated 12,000 pairs of shoes last year!” That sounds awesome, right? Except... why? What impact are shoes having on a person’s life? Are they keeping kids healthier or in school longer? Is the charity measuring data in the community both before and after the shoes were given to see what has changed? Or are they just dropping them off and driving away (because that’s pretty much useless). We need to know what IMPACTS the shoes have had on the community. •
•
•
2. “We operate in 92 regions!” Ok, so they have a strong donor network which has allowed them to expand. But just because something is big doesn’t mean it’s effective. And in fact since it’s ideal to have specialized regional knowledge of every area you’re working in, it could actually be worse than a more singularly-focused charity. If you’re operating in 92 countries and think you’re doing a good job of it, then I better see 92 sets of stats on your website showing me all your receipts. •
•
•
3. “We raised $10 million last year.” Great, but it’s important to look at where exactly all that money ended up. How much went to overhead costs vs actual aid? Was it handed out in the form of cash or in the form of shoes? Did it go to individuals or to the community? It is important to ask and consider the different effects of each. •
•
•
Going back to lesson 1 your main question needs to be “WHAT IMPACT IS THIS HAVING ON THE RECIPIENTS?” It’s not about how many blenders they handed out to slum dwellers, it’s about “why tf are they handing out blenders to slum dwellers?!” (Don’t worry it’s not a real thing 😂) But for real: IMPACTS, NOT NUMBERS. •

{#NoIneffectiveAltruism Day 4} IGNORE THE LOUDEST VOICE
•
•
•
Charitable giving can end up being ineffective because rather than making well-researched, long-term plans of how to give, people often just hand their money over to whatever charity they happen to hear about first. •
•
•
We are far more careful about buying things than we are about giving money. When we need new computers, or cars, or even running shoes, we compare prices online and ask friends and read reviews to ensure we are making a smart choice. Rightly so, we are skeptical about putting money towards these things unless we know that the purchase is a good investment. So when a charity we know nothing about is collecting money, why do we instinctively pull out our wallets? •
•
•
I think we are more easily trusting that charitable work is always virtuous. The sad truth is, organizations can be well-meaning without actually being effective. If you really want the biggest “bang for your buck,” to make the most change with what you’ve got, then your giving can’t be random and sporadic. You should identify a few great organizations that you know make real impacts, and commit to donating to them regularly. •
•
•
And don’t forget that just because you’ve frequently heard the name of an organization (ie: The Red Cross) doesn’t mean it’s the best one out there. We’ve all heard of McDonald’s, but that doesn’t say anything about the food quality, it just means they are good at marketing. Don’t confuse the best marketers for the best charities. IGNORE THE LOUDEST VOICE. •

{#NoIneffectiveAltruism Day 3} COOPERATE, DON’T COMPETE. •
•
•
One big mistake that charities often make is becoming a competitor to local institutions, rather than working with them. •
•
•
I went on an interview once for a charity I won’t name, but that was building schools in a developing country and needed people to help create curricula to ensure the students were getting high-quality educations. Sounds nice in theory... but when I asked them how their schools interacted with existing government schools they basically said the government didn’t like them, because their schools had become a COMPETITOR to the public school system of that country. •
•
•
There are so many other options available here that do not undermine another government’s capability to govern. There’s setting up workshops for American teachers and local teachers to exchange techniques. There’s supporting schools directly by donating materials or fees for students struggling to pay. There’s working with schools to identify students at risk of dropping out, and helping them develop the resources to intervene. But making a country rely on foreign intervention to provide basic services like education is not in any way actually helping that country develop. •
•
•
It ties a bit into white savior complex when you assume the existing system is so broken and you are so capable that you can completely build a new system rather than supporting one that’s already been developed by people who actually understand the country. Charities should not make that mistake with schools, nor with any other service, from delivering shoes/clothes/toys that locals already sell to providing healthcare services that locals also provide. Charities should instead use the capabilities and institutions of locals whenever possible, and offer training if necessary. Shipping in planes full of foreigners who then take clients away from locals does no one any good. COOPERATE, DON’T COMPETE.

Does it exist? There are so many incentives on #luxuryapartments this time of year- let’s contribute 50% the paid commissions (paid by the luxury landlords!) this month back to a #charity of your choice? Not #1% not 10%, HALF! (Not altruism?.. Well I could sure use some!) #holidaycheer #giving

'Are you an altruist?' Altruism simply means improving the lives of others. Many people believe that altruism should necessarily denote sacrifice, but if you can do Good while maintaining a comfortable life for yourself, that's a bonus, this is altruism!

{#NoIneffectiveAltruism Day 2} Ah, what a peaceful sunset. Let this image soothe you as we talk about our next topic: the white savior complex. 🙅🏼‍♀️
•
•
•
Of course this is a “not all white people” and “not even exclusively white people” phenomenon, but it is an efficient way of describing some of the assumptions (mostly white) people from developed nations often make while giving money & time to (mostly not white) people in developing nations. Those assumptions, implicit or explicit, tend to be along the lines of: 1) We know what’s best for these people and 2) Our ideas alone will “save” them. •
•
•
Many charities simply show up and drop off goods or services because they assume they know what will help people the most. The issue with this is that while we may have greater academic knowledge than most impoverished villagers, we do not actually know anything about THEIR day to day lives and THEIR communities. For this reason it is so important for charities to communicate with the people they are trying to help, and ensure solutions are driven by actual needs in their communities rather than what YOU think they might want. •
•
•
Too many charities also paint those in poverty as helpless and hopeless, which puts the burden of saving on US, the volunteers. But people in poverty lack access to opportunity, not brains or drive, and you do not need to do everything for them. Charities that take control of the situation out of the hands of locals are not making real change. Ones that offer training and education, give funding for local leaders to organize within their communities, and allow recipients choices about how to use their aid are the most respectable and effective. •
•
•
So remember, you shouldn’t trust charities that talk more about you than your impacts, and you should also be skeptical of any charity which talks about ‘saving’ people rather than working with them. Humility is not just a pleasant personality trait... it is the only way to make your charitable efforts effective and responsive to real communities.

{#NoIneffectiveAltruism Day 1} The first and most important lesson about donating effectively is this: IT’S NOT ABOUT YOU. •
•
•
Does anyone remember the ice bucket challenge from a few years ago where everyone was dumping water on themselves? It was fun, right? 💦❄️ Unfortunately, it was also the epitome of something called DONOR-FOCUSED CHARITY. This type of giving doesn’t focus on the recipients of your money, it focuses on YOU and whether you are having a good time. And so many charities use this tactic to draw in donors and volunteers, while totally neglecting to mention how the charity is actually impacting its intended recipients. •
•
•
Voluntourism websites do it by broadcasting the beautiful setting of the country they work in and how good the experience will look on our resumes. Charities send us regular thank you cards and calendars and free pens for giving the tiniest one-time donation. And let’s face it, it can be tons of fun to snap selfies while working with adorable little kids and watch the likes & comments pour in. Not all of this is terrible, and I’m not saying we should eliminate it, but it doesn’t have anything to do with the actual purpose of doing charity: changing people’s lives for the better. These things are just a distraction, and the tangible impact we have on recipients must stay the center of attention, not ourselves. •
•
•
So many of us like to write about how charity changes us, but I rarely read individual accounts of how their charity changed the lives of others. Clearly, this is a huge problem... The one and only question you should be asking yourself each time you volunteer or give money is “WHAT IMPACT DOES THIS HAVE ON THE RECIPIENT?” If you find it difficult to answer that question, or believe your experiences impacted you more than them, it’s probably time you found a different charitable activity. And if that upsets you, here it is one more time for the folks in the back: IT’S 👏🏻NOT 👏🏻 ABOUT 👏🏻 YOU 👏🏻

'How can I make the biggest difference I can?' One way is to take a scientific approach to doing Good. Just as science consists of the honest and impartial attempt to work out what's true, and a commitment to believe the truth whatever it turns out to be, effective altruism consists of the honest and impartial attempt to work out what's best for the world, and a commitment to do what's best, whatever it turns out to be.

{Stay Tuned...} Choices have been made this year that will leave an increased number of people in need of help, both in my home country and around the world. As the holiday season approaches, many of us will choose to donate more of our time and money to the causes we care about, because let’s face it—most of us probably don’t need any more stuff. ☺️
•

Learning how to give both money and time effectively is something I care a lot about. These resources are both limited for a lot of us, but it doesn’t mean they can’t make an impact if we use them right. It’s all about distributing efficiently, and to do that it is important to understand which charities make real impacts and what types of interventions do the most good. •
•
•
In the coming month I’ll be sharing tips with you on how to be an “effective altruist” and approach charitable giving with a more discerning eye. The more we learn about this, the more effectively we can distribute our resources, and the more we can change the world.

Thanks to you, we’ve been able to donate over $65,000 to the Against Malaria Foundation.
Over the extended weekend we promised to donate 10 bed nets for every Bellroy sold online. And that's what we did. A donation that will fund more than 26,000 nets has been given to AMF for folks who desperately need protection from malaria. We're chuffed with the impact we could have in just one weekend - thanks to you. But our giving doesn't stop here. We continue to support effective charities all year 'round. So thank you. (Because without you, we couldn't help anyone at all)

For $4 you can provide a child with a bed net that will protect them from malaria for five years. Every day malaria kills 1,200 people, mostly children in Sub-Saharan Africa. The US eliminated the disease within its borders in 1951, and since that time has as a whole neglected the 400,000 people who die from it each year. Let’s change that this #GivingTuesday. Click the link in my bio to support the world’s most neglected people by contributing to the world’s most effective charity, the Against Malaria Foundation.
