Latino communities in East Harlem have rushed to provide aid in response to the hurricanes that have devastated the Caribbean and the 7.1-magnitude earthquake that struck Central Mexico last week, despite the distress of many not knowing their loved ones’ fate.
Nearly half of East Harlem -El Barrio’s- population is Latino, according to Census data, and it is home to a large Puerto Rican and Mexican diaspora. As the magnitude of the disasters unfolds, El Barrio residents are gathering donations as a first response to help victims back home. (Link in bio.) @hibadlewati @dmoravera
Help for Puerto Rico
All hands on deck.
With Puerto Rico suffering the devastating effects of Hurricane Maria, New York City has launched a host of efforts to assist the ailing island.
On Thursday at City Hall, Mayor Bill de Blasio and City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito announced that the city is deploying 36 members of a search and rescue task force to Puerto Rico, and will also send emergency management personnel to work with first responders in San Juan as soon as it is safe to get them there.
“They’ll go down as soon as they get clearance to land,” said de Blasio, who added that a nine-person team of police and fire personnel from New York City was already in Puerto Rico working with the Federal Emergency Management Association.
The powerful hurricane, which made landfall on the island early Wednesday, caused widespread flooding, knocked out cell phone towers and left the entire island without power.
“The reality is that the Puerto Rico that we knew two days ago is not the Puerto Rico we see today. This is a hurricane which was the most catastrophic in the history of the island,” said Mark-Viverito. “It is one that consumed the whole island – not one area of the island was saved. If you see the images of the devastation, of the flooding, now we’re really starting to get a sense of what the challenges are.”
