Didn't want this day to go by without giving the elephants of the world a shout out on this National Elephant Appreciation Day. When I worked with Ringling some of my favorite moments were just watching these beautiful creatures. They were so friendly and loved people. One day I was able to clean off one of the elephants before a show. Best memory of the show! Well, that and sitting next to Mark Oliver Gebel on the bus although I was too shy to say anything. 😆 My love of elephants has rubbed off on my daughter now. So happy to share those moments with her before Ringling closed. Go and appreciate an elephant! 🐘🐘🐘😍😊 #elephantappreciationday #elephant #elephantday #celebrateeveryday #circus #circuslove #ringlingbroscircus #rbbbcircus

Today is both world rhino day and elephant appreciation day. Here's some information and facts about these large African/Asian mammals:
1) A rhino's skin is extremely thick, reaching 5cm (2 inches) with little differences between species.
2) Elephant females can have babies until they are around 50 years old, they have the longest gestation period of any animal and usually give birth to one calf.
3) Rhinos have a fantastic sense of smell and hearing but see very poorly and will struggle to see anything further than 30 meters away.
4) An elephant's trunk is extremely dexterous and can pick up tiny objects with ease thanks to the 40,000 muscles it is made up of.
5) Rhinoceros comes from two Greek words, 'rhino' meaning nose and 'cerous' meaning horn.
6) Meanwhile the word elephant comes from the Greek word elephas meaning Ivory.
7) There are five distinct species of rhino in the world today: two from Africa (white and black) and three from Asia (Sumatran, Indian and Javan).
8) An elephant skin is so sensitive it can feel a fly land on it, and there closeted relative are small rodents called hyrax.
9) Rhinos horn is made out of keratin, the same substance as your nails and hair. Sadly they are all facing extreme threats of extinction as poachers kill them to sell the useless ivory on the black market for large amounts of money.
10) Similarly elephants are also hunted for body parts; although predominantly for their tusks made of Ivory, their tails are used as fly swatters, their feet and bins and their skin as material.
Each of these species are hunted for something that belongs to them and them alone. The one animal that needs a rhino horn or an elephants tusk is those rhinos and elephants. We must continue our work to end the Ivory and wildlife trade or these animals will become extinct in the next few decades. #usoa #u_s_o_a #universalsocietyofanimals #news #animal #animals #animalkingdom #nature #wild #wildlife #conservation #day #2017 #rhino #elephant #elephantday #rhinoday #world #worldrhinoday #elephantaporeciationday #africa #asia #sos #saveourspecies

Today is Elephant Appreciation Day. Here's some Trivia {pic taken with my DSLR} 🐘🐘 1. It’s true that an elephant never forgets, and that’s because of the size of their hippocampus, the part of the brain where memories are stored, is so large.
2. Speaking of brains, did you know that elephants have the largest brains of any land animal in pure mass? At birth, an elephant’s brain size has only reached 35% of its potential size, and that means that they have a huge capacity for learning as they grow and develop.
3. With such big brains, that means that elephants are highly intelligent, and highly social. They have their own language, and this makes it easy for them to form strong bonds with each other, and with other species.
4. Elephants are one of the few animals with self awareness. Like humans, apes, and dolphins, elephants can recognize themselves in a mirror.
5. World Elephant Day is celebrated on August 12, and was created to bring awareness to the plight of African and Asian elephants throughout the world.
6. Their trunks have 40,000 muscles and tendons, and it takes about a year for them to learn how to use it.
7. They weigh thousands of pounds and still manage to be quick and nimble. They can move up to 35 mph, stop on a dime, and travel over mountain ranges with no problems.
8. They follow the oldest female in their group, which is not typical of social hierarchy in the animal kingdom. They do this because she has the most memory, and knows where the safe haven is, where the food is, and where to go in a storm.
9. In the wild, elephants can live to be in their 40s. In captivity, they can live even longer.
10. Elephants have the longest eyelashes in the world. They’re about 5 inches.
