Before... After - In October 2016, Dominion found something unexpected at Ekati, the diamond mine it owns in Canada’s Northwest Territories: a 65.93 ct. piece of bright, sparkling yellow rough. It was a big stone. It had a strong yellow color. It would no doubt make an impressive polished stone. The trick was turning it into one. Following the discovery, Dominion sent its newest pride and joy to be cut at New York City–based Optimum Diamonds, which specializes in manufacturing rare fancy colored pieces. Optimum used lasers to remove a chunk of the bottom—about 4.7 carats worth. In an unusual move, Optimum decided to turn that piece of excess into a 2.5 carats “satellite” stone (a radiant / last visual) ///// 'THE ARTIC SUN' - 30.54 carats Emerald cut fancy VIVID yellow diamond. Before... and After step by step photos // 1. Rough initial weight: 65.93 carats // 2. To center the culet, Optimum lasered the diamond into two pieces. The smaller piece came out to 4.7 carats, which was later cut into the “satellite” stone. Current weight: 60.52 carats // 3. This is the diamond post-lasering, with a more centered culet. Some window facets have also been added to give an interior look at the stone, and there’s been preliminary work on the table facet. Current weight: 53.27 carats // 4. The stone is starting to be blocked, meaning the major facets are being put into place. The perimeter’s been worked on as well. The laser left lines that gave it a brackish (muddy) appearance. Current weight: 49.53 carats // 5. There has been more faceting on the crown (top) and pavilion (bottom) as well as shaping on the outline.
Current weight: 44.57 carats // 6. The emerald shape is clear. Almost all facets are in place, though many are still not at the right size or angle. And there are still polished lines. Current weight: 36.68 carats // 7. With a fancy vivid yellow grade from GIA, the diamond, named the Arctic Sun, is ready for its close-up. Final weight: 30.54 carats // 8. 'Satellite' radiant. Weight: 2.5 carats. #DominionDiamonds#EkatiMine#Canada#RoughDiamond#OptimumDiamonds#FancyVivid#Yellow#EmeraldCut#Radiant#Diamond#ArticSun

Before... After - 'THE LESOTHO' diamond. The original brown rough diamond weighing 601.26 carats (twelfth largest of gem quality at that time) was unearthed on Friday, 26 May 1967 by a woman (Mrs Ramaboa) in the South African kingdom of Lesotho. Fearing for her life, the woman (and her husband) fled on foot for four days and nights to sell the incredible stone under government protection. The rough was finally purchased by Harry Winston. After weeks of study and the making of more than twenty replicas, the Lesotho was cleaved into two pieces by Harry Winston's cutter, Pastor Colon Jnr on 5 March 1968. The delicate operation of cleaving was broadcast live on television in 1968. The polishing of the Lesotho was completed the following year and resulted in eighteen gems weighing a total of 242.5 carats (equivalent to 40.33% of the original rough weight). They were noticeably lighter in colour than had been expected). The largest, The LESOTHO I, is an exquisite 71.73 carat Emerald cut diamond of VVS2 Clarity, Type IIa // LESOTHO II is an elongated flawless light brown Emerald cut - 60.67 carats // Onassis purchased the 40.42-carat LESOTHO III (Marquise shape) for Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis’ engagement ring. (The ring was later sold by Sotheby's in New York on April 24, 1996 for $2,587,500) // LESOTHO IV - Pear - 16.35 carats // LESOTHO V - Pear - 11.19 carats // LESOTHO VI - Pear - 6.98 carats // LESOTHO VII - Pear - 4.33 carats // LESOTHO VIII - Pear - 4.15 carats // LESOTHO IX - Pear - 4.07 carats // LESOTHO X - Emerald - 3.87 carats // LESOTHO XI - Emerald - 3.50 carats // LESOTHO XII - Marquise - 3.22 carats // LESOTHO XIII - Square - 2.75 carats // LESOTHO XIV - Pear - 2.32 carats // LESOTHO XV - Emerald - 2.15 carats // LESOTHO XVI - Marquise - 1.86 carat // LESOTHO XVII - Pear - 1.86 carat // LESOTHO XVIII - Round - 1.08 carat #Lesotho#LESOTHODiamond#Sothebys#HarryWinston#GolcondaType#EmeraldCut#LightBrownColour

Elizabeth Taylor: Giant #EmeraldCut Diamond
In her #lifetime , #ElizabethTaylor married eight times (that's a lot of rings!). But of all the massive baubles in the self-proclaimed #jewelry fanatic's trove, one of the most envy-worthy has to be the engagement ring from her third #marriage to film and theater producer #MikeTodd . He presented her with a 29.4-carat emerald-cut #diamond , and the rock is so huge that apparently Taylor adoringly referred to it as her "ice skating rink."
