🌟Yemrehana Krestos Church🌟
This ancient building made by stone and wood is one of the various types of Ethiopian Orthodox Churches. It is located near Lalibela in northeastern Ethiopia and was build in the 11th century by Emperor Yemrehana Krestos who was a member of the Zagwe Dynasty (Dynasty of the Agew) which ruled Ethiopia between the Fall of Axum and the Restoration of the Solomonic Dynasty in 1270. 🌟
According to Ethiopian traditions it was in 1137 that Mara Takla Haymanot - the first Zagwe ruler - defeated the descendants of of the infamous jewish Queen Yodit from southern Ethiopia who destroyed the already declining Axumite state in the 10th century. However there are also other traditions who connect the descendants of Yodit and the early Zagwe monarchs.
Even though some see the Zagwe as illegitimate rulers who usurped the Imperial Throne it is important to note that the time of their reign was characterized by the continuity of axumite traditions (->architecture) aswell as a time of stability & prosperity of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. Their greatest legacy are the 11 rock hewn churches in Lalibela which are identified by many people as the Eight Wonder of the World. 🌟
