Maidenform - futuristic bras in the rocket-to-the-moon era. Madonna had it right, wearing them as outer garments. Why'd you want to hide these works of architecture?! Found in a newspaper in my Uncle Dieter's collection of papers and family photographs.

This Rosh Hashanah card comes from one of our family collections. Belonging to Helene Susanne Marcus, it was sent 5 October 1929. Originally from Kassel in Germany, the Marcus family were not particularly religious yet the Nazi boycott of Jewish businesses made it increasingly difficult for her father to earn a living. Susanne was sent to England in 1937, aged 15 and was joined by her parents before the outbreak of the Second World War.

When the interior of the bus looks like you booked a business class plane ticket.

Downside: the driver seems to be a newbie, it took me more than 5 hrs to reach my destination.
Left too early and went home very late

I've been given a small case of old family papers. Can't wait to take a look through them properly this weekend. .

Written today 72 years ago to my Grandmother from her brother Bill who was stationed "somewhere in France" during World War 2. <3 "Dear Sis,
Received your letter today and was very glad to hear from you. Try to write often Hazel and I'll try to do the same. I also received the Valentines greeting. Thanks for remembering. Glad to hear you are back at work. I hope you are in the best of health now. The New England states had a pretty hard winter this year- didn't they? Do you hear from your boyfriend very often? I was also surprised to hear about Adele being engaged. The "kids" sure have grown up fast. I probably won't know them when I do get to see them. It's been a long time since I've been home hasn't it? After the war is over my honey and I are going to take a trip to Conn. to visit you all. That will be another great day in my life. Mildred is a darling wife Hazel, I hope you get the chance to meet her soon. Another month to go and I'll be a papa. I sure do like the idea. Bye now-- Bill. "

It's always interesting to work using old family letters and documents. This letter was part of a family collection from the 1790s which fortunately, had been stored safely and remains in good condition. It provided a unique insight into a client's family history. © Devon Family History Research 2017. All rights reserved.

Day 25 of the November #genealogyphotoaday challenge: worn. Pictured here is a "reasonable facsimile" of the formal #dress #worn by my mother to a springtime dance during her college years. Mom drew the picture in a letter she wrote home to her parents, and she said the dress looked just "like a pink cloud." It was pink chiffon with a real full skirt and all tucked and shirred on top. She also described it as "slishy," which I guess meant snazzy and gorgeous back then! #formalattire #familyhistory #1950s #ancestry #letters #Nierstefamily #familypapers @genealogyphoto

Prisoners from Yugoslavia (2 of 2)

Nada Verbic was born on 28 November, 1914 in Ljubljana in Austria-Hungary (present day Slovenia). After school she worked as an accountant and correspondent. Nada was an active participant of resistance and collected medical equipment, clothes, and money for partisans. Because of this, she was arrested on 17 April, 1944 and deported on 6 May, 1944 to the concentration camp Ravensbrück. From there, on 8 June, 1944, she was sent to the Hamburg-Wandsbek warehouse (Dräger AG) and on 2 May, 1945 to the Hamburg-Eidelstedt satellite camp of the Neuengamme concentration camp. After liberation, she was in the Displaced Persons camp in Altona where she organised cultural activities. She returned to Ljubljana in September, 1945 and worked as a Librarian.

It's wonderful to come across an unexpected find like this - one of several watercolours discovered amongst a batch of family history papers. It was a family with a strong naval tradition, and this watercolour was painted by a young naval officer who went on to become an admiral.

Today’s featured department in our continuing #intothearchives series is Special Collections. While the vast majority of the Archives’ holdings are government records, Special Collections is a little different. We care for items gifted or deposited to the Archives, rather than transferred from government agencies. Special Collections is where we find information about the people of Maryland that isn’t available in official records. Government records and Special Collections complement each other and help our researchers and patrons tell the complete stories of all the people of Maryland, whether recognized by the history books or not.
You may already have seen some of our whiskey bottles featured in our #whiskeywednesday series, or some of our photographs and newspapers. Special Collections contains these items and more, like a tree stump, a piece of moon rock, a flintlock pistol, battle flags, a seat from old Memorial Stadium, a pair of tickets to the 1966 World Series, thousands of photographs and negatives, including daguerreotypes and glass plate negatives, newspapers dating back all the way to Colonial Maryland, family papers, a Civil War soldier’s diary detailing the Battle of the Crater, letters from soldiers on the Western Front during World War I, scrapbooks, rare books, maps, artwork, church records, business records and much more. If you’re curious about what else we have, please check out the link in our profile page to the Guide to Special Collections #behindthescenes #MDArchives #specialcollections #moonrock #worldseries #1966worldseries #orioles #Os #baseball #baltimore #memorialstadium #glassplatenegatives #daguerreotypes #newspapers #WWI #worldwarone #greatwar #westernfront #civilwar #diaries #familypapers #rarebooks #maps #pistol #battleflags #battleofthecrater #letters #frankrobinson
