A less mundane afternoon at work.
I was at the Sarawak State Stadium today to meet with the Sarawak footballers. Some were too friendly (as expected to be), while some were reserved.
I gave the squad a briefing and attended to work matters with them. When formalities were out of the way, I had the chance to chat with a few players and their coach. One Defender had to miss out on practice due to injuries. So him and I chatted a little longer in their locker room.
Then, walking out into the afternoon sun and towards the field, one of them kicked a ball my way. "Do you still know how to dribble?" Asked the coach.
This team consists of mostly non-Chinese. Which was delightful and entertaining. "Are you not Chinese? No? Malay? Iban? You're mixed aren't you?" A question directed at me repeatedly. Oh how amusing it always gets when people have such difficulty trying to figure me out. // When I was a little girl, daddy bought tickets and brought me to our first football match together, live, at the old State stadium.
Fast forward to about three or four years ago, I had the privilege to catch live matches at the new field itself, right behind goal posts, and moved around the track as I took photographs of players and fans in action.
Today, I finally got the opportunity to check out their locker room. It was a short trip, but a memorable one.
And all the while, only one person came to mind. Jen, if only you were still around on this earth, it would have been another meaningful visit to the field. But you're not around, and I had to swallow those memories on my own. I miss you very much, Jen.
