DAY 4 - CALORIES VS NUTRIENTS

I’m not a fan of counting calories. I much prefer to look at the nutrients I’m taking in. 
When you’re hungry, your body isn’t craving calories, it’s craving nutrients. If you fill your body with fast food, why do you think it’s hungry again within the hour even though you’ve had a huge amount of calories? 
If you restrict your calories you WILL lose weight initially, but if you’re fuelling yourself with nutrient-poor foods, how rubbish will you feel? Also, your body’s metabolism will reset to conserve energy and hunger levels rise. This causes your weight loss to plateau, so you’d have to restrict your calorie intake further to continue losing weight. Calorie counting also means you may lose focus on what else is important when making good food choices; such as high quality foods, rich in a variety of nutrients, and essential for proper bodily function. 
This is why I’m so passionate about educating people about INCREASING their NUTRIENT intake when they want to lose weight. By fueling your body with the nutrients it craves, it works better, you feel better, and you’re not as hungry between meals because your body is getting what it needs. “You don’t lose weight to get healthy, you get healthy to lose weight.” Top Tips: 🥗 Fill your plate with real food, focusing on fibre (eg vegetables and whole grains), protein (eg salmon or chicken), and good fats (eg a salad with olive oil or avocado). These foods are satisfying and move more slowly through your GI tract, so you’ll feel fuller for longer and you’ll naturally eat less of them, whilst still giving your body what it needs to work at its best. 🥗 Aim to “eat a rainbow” (add as much colour as possible), as this will provide a range of vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients.
🥗 If you’re hungry, add more vegetables and protein, not carbohydrates.
🥗 Make sure you’re eating mindfully so you can tell when you’re full.

You’ll be feeling so much better than if you just focused on counting calories!

There’s an art to blending herbs for a personalised prescription. I love the process of matching a combination of healing plants to a patient who needs them. 
I combine the principles of Tibetan Medicine and western herbal medicine in each prescription. Let me explain more ... Firstly, I choose herbs based on their physical health supporting actions as well as their affinities to organs and systems within the body.  Here’s where I might choose urinary system herbs or cardiovascular supporting herbs for example. Within these categories I can consider both traditional use and evidence based usage. Within this more ‘physical based’ aspect I should also say that I take fully into account a patient’s existing allopathic drug regime and I ensure that herbs that I choose will not have adverse interactions with the drugs.

Secondly, I consider each patient according to their Tibetan Medicinal presentation. I look at how the humours are out of balance and what elemental qualities are needed. For instance if a patient is suffering from a nervous disorder linked to an excess of rLung (the air or wind humour) they need to have more influence from earth and water elements to bring grounding and stability. They will feel better if they take rich, oily and nutritious remedies and foods. 
Herbs which are considered ‘sweet’ (ie nourishing), ‘sour’ and ‘salty’ are best for rLung conditions whereas ‘bitter’ herbs if not prescribed carefully can actually aggravate rLung. There are many western herbs used to calm the nervous system which are actually ‘bitter’ in nature. Think of Chamomile or Skullcap- these are actually quite bitter... continued in comments.

And just like that, his birthday is over. Master 5 is now officially Master 6. Not sure I'm ready to be a parent of a six year old! 😬

We started a new tradition this year where the birthday child gets to choose what we eat on their birthday. Master 6 chose chocolate milkshakes for breakfast (not quite as bad as it sounds - banana, frozen cauliflower, cocoa and almond milk), waffles for lunch (thanks @theorganicbeancafe in Kingston for such amazing #paleo waffles), and hotdogs for dinner. I used a @chefpeteevans paleo bun recipe and @cleaversorganicmeat beef hotdogs. So yummy! Even Pop loved them and he's not paleo at all. 👍🏻 Parenting is tough. The lack of sleep, the constant questioning and self-doubt, the lack of sleep...oh wait, did I mention that already?! But, it's so worth it. Six amazing years of being a mummy. First to one, and then to two, beautiful little souls. They make my heart so full. And I wouldn't change it for the world.

I’m a firm believer in the idea of nourishing the inside, then helps you flourish on the outside. ✨
I was gone for a few days on a mini vacay, so I couldn’t be on my A game with eating and exercising.. which is totally fine. Because it’s good to enjoy yourself and be present in all areas when it comes to vacationing and spending time with family/friends. 👯‍♀️

However, man did I notice the difference in how I felt. Now, I didn’t go crazy in my eating.. as my stomach is super sensitive so I really can’t. But I did allow myself to enjoy a few things I wouldn’t normally eat on the daily. I.e *some treats, fried food, little bit of ice cream 🙈🍦🍟🍰🍫🍔

But getting back on track today; it’s amazing how much more energy and less heavy + groggy I really feel!
What we eat is central to our health. Nutrients give our bodies instructions about how to function. 
Thinking of food in a healthy way by viewing it as getting the proper nutrition that goes beyond calories or grams, good and bad foods. By having this mindset it leads us to focus on foods we should include rather than foods to exclude.
Instead of viewing food as the enemy, we need to look to food as a way to create health and reduce disease by helping the body maintain function. Let’s start fueling our bodies with the right kinda nutrients... and just because it’s “healthy” doesn’t mean it has to taste bad 😝
