I was so tired today because I was up at the crack of dawn to train a client deep out in the Bronx in City Island. I came home and took a nap and overslept so I contacted my teacher and told him I could not come drum for his class today because I would be too late. He told me to try anyway so I rushed as fast as I could from Harlem/Washington Heights to #BedStuyBrooklyn and when I walked in the drummers had already started. The #energy was up and the entire room was dripping with sweat so I immediately sat down and begin drumming.
I have been studying #Haitian drum rhythms since2006 but since I started pole dancing I have neglected it. However many of the rhythms that I learned years ago are forever embedded in my heart. So I went at it and as usual I had a broken nail in the end but luckily no blood this time.
People always look at me and say “how do you drum with those nails?” And “how do you type with those Nails?” Well I do everything with these nails and I often do it better and faster than people with no nails. My nails are naturally very strong and it takes a ton of pressure to break them.
However, when you are drumming for a dance class you can’t stop because it changes the vibrational energy in the room. So just like when you’re dancing you gotta keep on going but even more so because the drummers set the pace. So I go into my trance like state so I can stay in my place but yet I am still fully present.
It is an honor that my teacher asked me to come play today and then gave me extra encouragement when I almost didn’t make it.
I can never stay away from #NYC for too long because I need this shit in my life forever and always and you can’t find this in most of the country. Now I’m back on it. I will be practicing all of the rhythms I have studied over the years (mostly Afro Puerto Rican, Congolese and Haitian) and embed them in my heart even more. I have had dreams of putting it all together one day and I will.
And much love to all of the #HaitianDrummers who have always been so welcoming to me. I am forever #inspired by Haitian Art.
Psst. You’re not alone in whatever you’re going through right now, and things will get better in time. You’re stronger than you think you are. Believe in yourself. It’s such a hard thing to do sometimes I know, but I believe in you. You’ve got this. That is all, continue scrolling💜🎶 Photo taken by @mattboltz
