A couple common back exercises with a bit of a twist!

For the first ☝🏽one, I am standing rather than sitting. This allows for 0 momentum and allows you to target more of the middle portion of the back! And for the second ✌🏽exercise, I elevated myself by sitting up on a dumbbell. This allows me to target the lower portion of my lats! Keep in mind, the wider your back is, the smaller your waist will appear, so don't neglect working out your lats ladies (and gents)!! ::both exercises are sped up::

Recently I had a chance chat with the doctor on the college campus. We talked about how it's such a swim against the tide to try and eat healthy. You really have to fight for it. And so many people need education on how to do it in modern society. It's not set up for success. You have to fight to set up an environment for success.  It's too easy to fall into the temptations of fast food, instant gratification, insta everything really!

Don't go down the path of hormone paranoia. I have a low thyroid, low a-bunch-of-hormones really, and it's still always ALL ABOUT THE FOOD.  All the hormone issues are only a slight change in metabolism.  It is a huge distraction to go down that path. .

We have to #fightforit .
.
No one is going to get a free pass.
It will be easy to say he or she has this or that advantage. Even me, when people see me for the first time in the gym, usually from enough distance that they don't see how wrinkled my face really is, they say "But she is 20 years younger than me, or she is genetically gifted, or she does not know what this or that is like". .
.
The truth is they are wrong about all of that. I'm usually older, have many of the same issues or more, and I have many genetic disadvantages, proven by dna tests, the family history, and real life relatives and an identical twin.
.
Oh and photoshop. Nope. Real tan, real trees. Real dirt. Real smile. .

Do you sometimes not know where to start?  But finally you pick one thing, maybe it's the dishes, or the laundry, or vacuuming, or dusting, it doesn't really matter. What works is you pick one thing and you just start doing it. .
If you have to stop and rest and pick it up later that's what you do.

If it was easy everyone would do it. I don't care what kind of cliche that is. It's true. Look around you.

Tips for pie crust:
To make TENDER pastry; Blend soft fat into the flour before adding any liquid. Fat coats the proteins and prevents them from forming gluten. Instead of water, use an ingredient that is part fat, such as sour cream, cream, or egg yolks. Gluten can’t form without water (gluten causes a hard stiff texture), and the addition of fat contributes to tenderness.

To make FLAKY pastry; Keep the fat cold and in lard pieces (pea-size). Large cold pieces will remain firm in the oven long enough to create flakes. Flatten large pieces of cold fat. Chunky pieces will make hols in the crust rather than act as spacers.

PIE CRUST RECIPE:
3 ounces (6 tablespoons) butter, chilled
1 ounce (2 tablespoons) lard, chilled
6 ounces (approximately 1 cup) all-purpose flour, plus extra for rolling dough
1/2 teaspoon table salt
1/4 cup ice water
Place butter and lard in freezer for 15 minutes. When ready to use, remove and cut both into small pieces.
2. In the bowl of a food processor, combine flour and salt by pulsing 3 to 4 times. Add butter and pulse 5 to 6 times until texture looks mealy. Add lard and pulse another 3 to 4 times. Remove lid of food processor and sprinkle surface of mixture thoroughly with water. Replace lid and pulse 5 times. Add more water and pulse again until mixture holds together when squeezed. Place mixture in large zip-top bag, squeeze together until it forms a ball, and then press into a rounded disk and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
3. Preheat oven to 450 degrees F.
4. Place 2 metal pie pans in the refrigerator to chill.
5. Remove dough from refrigerator. Cut along 2 sides of the ..Remove pie pans from refrigerator and set first pan on top of dough. Turn everything upside down and peel plastic from bottom of dough. Place second pan upside down on top of dough and flip again. Remove first pan from atop dough.  Bake 15 minutes. .

What are BCAA's and what can they do for you? They can help to delay mental and physical fatigue from long workouts, help prevent decline in the immune system from exercise stress, and help reduce exercise induced muscle damage and DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness). It's a good idea to take them if you like to do fasted workouts because it helps supply your muscles with amino acids and keep you anabolic. .

BCAA's are the amino acids leucine, isoleucine, and valine and they are special because they bypass the liver (which is the security checkpoint in your body for just about everything - BCAA's get a free pass from the checkpoint - haha) and enter directly into your blood stream and get to the muscle faster than others.  Their carbon chains are "branched" or bent, so that is why they are called branched chain amino acids.

WHEN to take them? You only really need to take them for fasted workouts, or workouts longer than one hour.  It won't hurt to take them other times, but those are really the only times your body has the greatest need for them if you are eating a balance diet with plenty of complete proteins.

I graduated from the police academy at age 45 thinking I was going to be a BadAss cop chick.  Instead, my weight ballooned up to 197 pounds while I ran marathon after marathon thinking I could fix it.  No, it's the food not the exercise.  I lost 85 pounds by age 50 and have never looked back.  I'm 57 now.

I had my last straw moment like everyone else.  I was depressed and had a myriad of health issues.  You can argue with me all you want on whether at 5 foot nothing tall with a lean body mass of only 100 pounds, that 197 is not obese.  My internal organs, joints, and bones were stressed to the max.  Call it what you want.  It was not healthy.

It's a problem.  I fixed it.  It was not easy.  I'm never going back! Of course it's hard.  It it was easy everyone would do it already!

Week Two. Getting back to working out has given me such a sense of self again. For such a long time with the pregnancy I felt everything was so out of my control, I was powerless to all the changes that were taking place. We are meant to keep going.

Ever wonder how a flex contraction actually happens? Or why sometimes your muscles cramp up and why just because potassium works for your friend it might not work for you?  Let's start with the flex question: It starts with a calcium molecule. THAT is why you need micro nutrients. A brief description of what happens in a muscle contraction further below (and a funny picture the next slide over of where I drew it on the board in my college class).

The muscle cramp: This is WAY MORE complicated and your electrolyte balance could be different from your friend. I get finger and toe cramps when I don't get enough calcium.

You can get electrolytes in mineral salt, any mustard, and of course a few in some foods like a banana has potassium.  I like taking the electrolytes that are in several of the 1st Phorm products (ask me about those any time), as well as mustard and various foods, AND of course I like what I get in the Daily greens and micro nutrient packet I post a lot on my instaStory.

Okay, the muscle contraction: The calcium travels to the muscle and causes a change reaction of events in two different types of muscle fibers and the whole process is called the crossbridge cycle. ATP energy in your body is used and phosphate is released.  There are a lot of cool videos on YouTube that explain this with cool animation, if you want me to send you a link to my favorite video that explains this let me know.
