The Dome of Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore was begun in 1296 by Arnolfo di Cambio, who provided a very basic framework for the structure. The chief architect of the Dome, as we see it today was Filippo Brunelleschi, who died before it's completion (the addition of the gilt copper ball and cross by Andrea del Verrocchio) in 1469. To this day, it is still the largest brick dome ever constructed.
tl/dr: I stood under a VERY, VERY OLD architectural masterpiece today.
