| Ticks and Lyme Disease |
Sorry for the grim photo but an important topic as requested by @rockriver_expeditions.
Government estimates say 5-8 people are infected with #lymedisease each day in the UK and early treatment with antibiotics is vital to ensure full recovery, before the neurological problems and joint pain start. #ticks can be as small as a poppy seed and so easy to miss and their bites are not painful so if you have been #outdoors , especially in #longgrass , do check yourselves fully in the evening. Contrary to popular belief there is no minimum time for a #tick to be attached before it transmits #infection so watch for the early symptoms which include flu, headaches and fatigue and maybe, but not always, the classic #bullseyerash .
If you find one use a cheap tick removal tool - never burn them or smother in oil or Vaseline as this will distress them and cause them to regurgitate. Also check your pets as 1 in 3 dogs have a tick on them which then can fall off in your home.
As always prevention is better than cure so
- wear #insectrepellent
- avoid walking through long grass
- tuck trousers into socks
- wear light coloured clothing
- shower and check for ticks when home
See @lymediseaseuk for further information.

"A generous helping of common sense" is exactly how we would love everyone to approach first aid. Every situation is different so we can only teach you the theory and need you to decide on the best actions.
As a "parent of young children" I feel more qualified than many of my colleagues to teach our paediatric course as I can relate to how you and they will react when something happens. If you are pregnant, are a parent or are responsible for children at any time then do join us on Saturday 22nd July in SW London for our next public course. Details on website in bio.
Last wkend, I took the initiative to get my WFA certification thru BackCountry LifeLine. I find myself at a loss of words in an attempt to express the importance of this course especially when it's geared toward my passion, mtbing. This was extremely valuable education that I hope my friends also seek. My riding prep will forever be changed. Thank you BCLL for creating the perfect curriculum to enhance my preparedness and focus to continue riding smart and strong. #firstaidcourse#bikesarerad#backcountrylifeline#outsideisfree#besmart#prepared
