The show tonight was east at sunset. Storm clouds were rolling in off the ocean, it got pretty windy & the temperature dropped. It never rained but it gave us the most amazing fluorescent skies. The colors you see are right out of the camera but it actually appeared even brighter than what I could even capture. The colors were unbelievable.

(Swipe left) Racing against the clock this week, we finally found a group of Purple Martins for three rehabilitated youngsters to join before fall migration. By now, most Purple Martins have headed south, so we were worried we would not find any martins in our area for our trio to migrate with. Our staff networked for days, searching for a wild flock—and we found one!—a tree in a restaurant parking lot in Miami. This video shows an estimated 250 Purple Martins, flying in after a day of feeding on insects, circling around in the sky at dusk. (Listen closely to hear their vocalizations.). The three birds from SFWC joined the flock in flight before roosting in the tree for the night. Our medical team and nursery care personnel dedicated almost two months of treatment and rehabilitation to ready these birds for release – just in time to catch the remaining departures to South America for the winter!
