#historicalCountryoftheday - The Free Territory or Makhnovia in Ukraine (1918-1921)
The Free Territory was an attempt to form a stateless anarchist society in East Ukraine. It came about during the Ukrainian revolution, which coincided with the Bolshevik revolution in Russia. The area was many poor farmers, with a very argricultural mindset. There was no leader, farms and small groups of people traded goods with each other. The area covered around 7 million people with strong Russian ties as it bordered south west Russia. A local hero Makhno lead the army but only from a strategic point of view. They were founded first of all on equality and solidarity of its members. Everyone, men and women, worked together with in a perfect Harmony that they should work on fields or that they should be used in housework. The capital was Huliaipole, but has no major governmental function. The Territory was annaxed by the Soviet Union with small resistance but due to the scale of armies it was impossible. And the Makhnovist and Kropotkinists were banned and outlawed due to the Soviet one party policy.
The area today is similarly disputed and Russian forces occupy the area in Ukraine.
The Free Territory had no major effect on world history but it gave a small an interesting case study on Anarcho-Communist societies, even if it didn't really get the chance to flourish.
