Everywhere I teach this pose it brings up a number of β€˜ughhhh’, β€˜this is sooo haaaaard’… even some cursing. I don’t think it’s that difficult, but it requires a certain alignment that’s not easy to hit. For starters, a lot of practitioners are not that β€˜fascinated’ with Shoulderstand, so they don’t practice it, or they use it as a quick transition pose into deeper stretches like Plow. One of the lessons that Shoulderstand teaches is, check this out, to β€˜stand/balance on your shoulders’…hmmm, we’re getting somewhere… if you NEVER (or barely) hold it, how can you practice your balance there? If you put too much weight in the cervicals, try placing a thick mat/blanket under the shoulder line. From my experience, a lot of people don’t tuck the elbows under ENOUGH to properly support themselves. You also need to reach up/project through the legs, engage the low back and the abdomen so the thick β€˜belt’ between the ribs and hips is solid as a brick wall, nothing can bend or tilt it anywhere…Allow the chin to tuck deeply into the sternum and balance on the highest part of the blades. Press the triceps against the floor and lower carefully both arms, palms facing down, pushing strongly too. Squeeze elbows towards each other as well as inner legs together, to feel lighter. Think steadiness and strength. Gaze towards the toes and take a few long breaths. Start from the regular/supported version, find the most vertical line you can, then either stay there or attempt the unsupported one. If you #practice it consistently, I assure you, not only it’ll be very doable but it’ll also help you stabilize other inversions and arm balances. Days 8 and 9 of #fortheloveofyoga were #frogpose and #forearmplank variant. Fly was kicking my butt this weekend so frog pose was aided heavily by yoga blocks and turned into a napping session. Had to use my grippy socks for the forearm plank by the wall. It didn't last very long... getting yourself level is a struggle yo. Then I went to sleep.

day 4 of #ForTheLoveOfYoga with @cyogalab. #standingbackben #anuvittasana. I was told I have inborn lower back issue when I was 13. I have a tiny extra bone attaches to my third vertebrate. I lived with waist support for my entire middle school and high school. So I thought #backbend would be my weakness. But when I saw this pic, I realized what yoga had done to me! It increased my spine flexibility soooo much!!!! I meant this is definitely not a great back bend for some people, but for me this is a huge progress. Thank you Yoga ! Namaste.

I tried Carmen's variant and I couldn't bend backwards into camel with half lotus....lol it was really weird. .... I really wanted lotus too but I just don't bend like that. πŸ˜… I have been working on hip openers to access lotus....with time! 
I felt pretty doing this variation though, sorta felt like a dancer. Even though I suck at dancing. Lol

An immediate modification for last night’s pose is regular Shoulderstand, but this is another variant you can try, to build up strength and stamina. The further out the palms, the straighter the arms and the closer the feet, the harder it gets so, if you need to alter it a bit, start with those three and play around with them. Especially the hand distance, a few inches closer/further away, will make a BIG difference. Make it more comfortable for the wrists by turning the palms out, fingers pointing in opposite directions. Notice how the WHOLE front of the body, literally from the shoulders to the toes, is extremely active and engaged. Pull the navel in and aim to find that diagonal line (no butts high up!). Look straight down to lengthen the neck and feel free to try some push ups (even a β€˜shy’ attempt to do so is challenging enough!) or put a pair of wool gloves or a couple of small towels, under the palms and β€˜slide’ in & out carefully and slowly. Watch out for your nose and don’t go too far (absolutely NOT speaking from experience….). Yesterday’s attempt at #eightanglepose from the  #fortheloveofyoga challenge left me a bit frustrated as I just couldn’t get my head around which limb had to go where or why it was so hard to get my behind off the floor! 😫I was lying in bed and still thinking about what I was doing wrong... just had a total mind block! Trying to β€œLet it go” did not help either! 😀 So this afternoon I turned the volume up on my playlist & just had another go! It took me a fraction of the time I spent yesterday! Done! Thank goodness for that! I’ll concentrate on being in the frame next time! πŸ˜‰

Yesterday’s attempt at #eightanglepose  from the #fortheloveofyoga  challenge left me a bit frustrated as I just couldn’t get my head around which limb had to go where or why it was so hard to get my behind off the floor! 😫I was lying in bed and still thinking about what I was doing wrong... just had a total mind block!
