We had a wonderful time taking over @fogfair’s Instagram account today! Be sure to follow @hosfeltgallery for more updates on our artists and our booth at #fogfair2018 . In the meantime, here’s a little teaser of what you can expect...

In Stefan Kürten’s aestheticized architectural images, there is nearly always a reflection: in a pool, a plate glass window, the structure of a building. Or sometimes it’s somewhere uncanny, like symmetry in the foliage of a carefully-clipped landscape or an inkblot-patterned sky.
More often than not, the reflections are suspect—a glimpse of something counterintuitive. A Miró (or is that a Kandinsky?) in the living room is definitely a Mondrian in the swimming pool. The windows of a house bathed in a midday glow reflect a starry nighttime sky. A verdant, overgrown tangle has, as its parallel, desert cacti. There’s an And-What-Alice-Found-There aspect to Kürten’s work—a line walked between photorealism and surrealism—that makes us ask, what is going on here? The imagery is too true to life, too subtly problematic for us to immediately know why it’s unsettling...
Inside the artist’s studio with Stefan Kürten...
Here we see the creation of a major new work by the artist titled “Black Mirror.” The piece originally started out as a series of dozens of sketches for Kürten’s masterwork on canvas, “Perfect World.” He saw these smaller works on paper as a way to experiment without the pressure of committing their motifs to his larger work on canvas. However, over time, the individual works took on a life of their own and evolved into a single painting. The finished product is a 5 1/2 x 7 foot multi-paneled work on paper representing the tenacious human belief in progress - our desire to make life happier and the world a better place.

Stefan Kürten likes to say that every weekend of his childhood was spent accompanying his parents and their realtor in their search for the “perfect home.” In his eighth solo exhibition, marking the 20th anniversary of working with Hosfelt Gallery, Kürten explores the deep and universal yearning to find that quintessential place.
“Millefleurs” opens today with a reception from 4-6pm. Stay tuned for more on the artist, behind-the-scenes footage, and a preview of our booth at #fogfair2018 !

Went to the Mexican Museum earlier today at Fort Mason. Quite a great collection for a relatively small space of four rooms. This striking—in more ways than one—work is 'Untitled, 1993' by Alejandro Santiago (1964-2013) made with "amate," a paper made by beating tree bark. It was then laid on canvas. I recommend a visit if you are in the area. #art#mexicanart#mexicanartists#mexicanmuseumsf#fortmason#surrealism
