Statue bust of Sir John Monash, GCMG, KCB, VD at the Shrine of Remembrance museum in Melbourne. He was a civil engineer and an Australian military commander of the First World War. He commanded the 13th Infantry Brigade before the war and then, shortly after its outbreak, became commander of the 4th Brigade in Egypt, with whom he took part in the Gallipoli campaign. In July 1916 he took charge of the newly raised 3rd Division in northwestern France and in May 1918 became commander of the Australian Corps, at the time the largest corps on the Western Front. The successful Allied attack at the Battle of Amiens on 8 August 1918, which expedited the end of the war, was planned by Monash and spearheaded by British forces including the Australian and Canadian Corps under Monash and Arthur Currie. Monash is considered one of the best Allied generals of the First World War and the most famous commander in Australian history.

#funfactfriday: Today is #champagneday (who needs a reason though, right?). What I most love about French bubbly — beyond the frenzied sparkle, silky-soft hiss and perfumed aroma — is its symbolism. As you can read in this fascinating book, champagne hails from arguably one of the most war-ravaged, blood-soaked areas on earth, yet it has survived every war and revolution and rampage to remain a sign of celebration not commiseration, proof that the good times will always win. Cheers to that ✨🍾✨

2,219 years ago today the Roman Republic led by Publius Cornelius Scipio annihilated the Carthaginian Imperial forces led by Hannibal Barca at the Battle of Zama. Thus ending the Second Punic War and sealing the fate of the Carthaginian Empire.
Two millennia later in 1805, Napoleon's Grand Armée would decisively defeat an entire Imperial Austrian army in a series of skirmishes known as the Battle of Ulm. Trapped in Ulm, the Austrians surrendered, with no major battle necessary and with few casualties for the French. Napoleon's victory led to his capture of Vienna, and to his finest victory at Austerlitz.
It would be just seven years later on this day also that Napoleon I would begin his withdrawal from Moscow. Little did he know the nightmare that was about to befall the Grand Armée.

Today, 236 years ago, on October 19, 1781 the Battle of Yorktown ends with a decisive victory by a force of American Continental Army soldiers led by General George Washington and French Army soldiers under Comte de Rochambeau against a British Army commanded by Lieutenant General Charles Cornwallis. The battle started on September 28, 1781 and was the last major land battle of the American Revolutionary War, because the surrender by General Cornwallis, and the capture of himself and his army helped push the British to negotiate an end to the to the war that had been going on for years. As the American force under Marquis de Lafayette shadowed the British force in Virgina, while the French West Indies fleet under Comte de Grasse won the naval Battle of the Chesapeake, which blocked any naval escape for the British. This encirclement allowed the French and Americans to bombard the British position with artillery. October 14, 1781 George Washington sent two columns to beat the last major remaining British outer defenses, the immense pressure made Cornwallis ask for capitulation terms on October 17. After two days of negotiation between the sides the surrender ceremony was held on October 19. Cornwallis was absent from the ceremony some say he was sick. With the capture of over 7,000 British soldiers, negotiations between the Americans and the British started which would result in the Treaty of Paris of 1783.

A month after entering a deserted Moscow, Napoléon Bonaparte took the hint and started his retreat. With the Russian Army having burnt everything behind them as they drew Napoléon’s forces towards Moscow, the French could find virtually nothing to sustain their march home. The increasingly weak and hungry French were constantly harassed by the Russians and forced to abandon their plundered loot, leaving a trail littered with discarded treasures. Napoléon lost more than 40,000 men during the retreat. He abandoned his troops on 8 December to head off a rumoured coup in Paris.

On this day in history, Félicette became the first (and only) cat to reach space and return alive. Just a stray from Paris in 1963, she was selected from 14 cats and rode a Véronique AGI 47 (a French sounding rocket) for 15 minutes, reaching a height of 156Km (about 97 miles). Definitely an inspiration for Gideon and myself. 😸

Typical shrine in the wall of an old country building. During the French Revolution, many manoirs and chateaux were destroyed and for decades the poor took many beautiful stones to incorporate in the building of very simple and small rural buildings. The stones forming this shrine come from a much older and grander building than the building they are now part of.

Bonjour !

On this day in 1685, French King Louis XIV revokes the Edict of Nantes, cancelling the rights of French Protestants, and replaces it with the Edict of Fontainebleau. The Edict of Nantes, created by Louis’s grandfather King Henry IV, began a period of peace and tolerance between Catholics and Protestants. Once it was revoked, Protestants were treated unequally, and an exodus from France was triggered.

#todayinhistory in 1685, The Edict of Nantes is lifted by King Louis XIV. The edict, signed at Nantes, France, by King Henry IV in 1598, gave the Huguenots religious liberty, civil rights and security. By revoking the Edict of Nantes, Louis XIV abrogated their religious liberties. 📜 Interesting fact: Henry IV endured multiple assassination attempts. Considered a usurper by Catholics and a traitor by Protestants, his charm and genuine care for the people's needs could not mollify his enemies. He was stabbed to death by a Catholic fanatic on May 14, 1610, and subsequently buried in the Basilica of Saint Denis in Paris. Years later, his head would be stolen by revolutionaries.

Before Picto Online...we used contact sheets. They are a direct print made from a roll or sequence of images of film. Before the days of digital, they were an invaluable tool to photographers to quickly look through and edit their work (choosing their best images). This particular image is found in the Magnum Contact Sheets book. It looks at famed Magnum photographers' hard-to-find contact sheets, revealing something like an "artist's sketchbook" from their vision of the world (Photos © René Burri / Magnum Photos). ⠀

A remarkable heritage site right in the centre of Paris, a place filled with history founded by Louis XIV in 1670 to house disabled soldiers and veterans, the Hotel national des Invalides is a prestigious setting for the Musée de l'Armée. Founded in 1905, when the collections of the Artillery Museum and the Army Historical Museum were merged, the current Musée de l'Armée holds and displays one of the world's richest collections of military objects and history.
With more than 500,000 arms, armours, artillery pieces, decorations, emblems, paintings and photographs, it proposes a journey through French military history from the Middle Ages to aftermath of the Second World War.
