#tbt to finding newspapers from the 1930s under flooring and in window frames. Chilling and fascinating to see references to Hitler and Nazism long before the occupation, before they could've imagined what would come. 1,486 years ago in 532 the Nika Riots were finally suppressed after a week of seeing hundreds murdered and destruction of much of Constantinople including the burning of the Hagia Sophia. Emperor Justinian came up with a clever plan to trick the mob that had assembled outside the palace at the hippodrome to crown one of the “green” faction by sending the leaders of the “blues” faction gold saying he still supported them. During the ceremony the blues fled the stadium. With that, Imperial troops led by Generals Belisarius and Mundus surrounded the stadium and slaughtered the remaining rebels, supposedly some thirty thousand.
Forward to 1701, Elector Friedrich III of Brandenburg (also Duke of Prussia) crowned himself King of Prussia. Friedrich was able to negotiate his title with Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I (at the time Crown Prince) who allowed his elevation despite the Imperial Germanic law stating only Bohemia could have that title outside the emperor. Due to a further dispute with the Polish-Lithuanian Diet he symbolically titled himself “King in Prussia”.
170 years later, Friedrich’s great great great grandson, Wilhelm I, was ceremonially crowned Emperor of Germany in the Hall of Mirrors in Versailles during the closing weeks of the Franco-Prussian War. Wilhelm has been Kaiser since 1 January as according to the new German Constitution but due to his own hesitation had waited to accept it.
65 years later the poet and writer, Rudyard Kipling, passed away due to complications after an intestinal haemorrhage. #justinian #byzantinehistory #constantinople #nikariots #ancienthistory #prussianhistory #monarchy #kingofprussia #frederickiofprussia #secondreich #germanempire #wilhelmiofgermany #francoprussianwar #versailles #frenchhistory #19thcentury #19thcenturyhistory #parispeacetreaty #rudyardkipling #howwegothere #historymatters #millenialmonarchist

Overlooking the Louvre.

Today we visited #Versailles! I’ve wanted to go here since learning about it back in middle school...and it was just as magnificent I had imagined! Don’t let the blue skies fool you though, it was a cold, WINDY day with rain off and on all day... that’s what I get for coming in January, but at least the crowds are low!

Marie Antoinette and Her Children - by Madam Louise Le Brun (1787)⠀
- - In this painting; Marie-Antoinette is pictured with her 3 children. The prince, Louis-Joseph, brings our attention to an empty cradle and to the child that Marie-Antoinette had lost in infancy… this was hopefully to garner sympathy and respect for the Queen that she too – like so many mothers at the time – knew the sorrow of losing a child. The princess, Marie Therese Charlotte, looks adoringly at her mother and the two boys are adorned with the colours of the French Royal family. It was a great PR stunt by all involved – although we all know that the public didn’t really buy into the story and the rest, as they say, is history. That time there was a metro strike in Paris and everyone told us there was NO WAY for us to get to Versailles. Nevertheless, I persisted. Versailles was on my bucket list. We took the train as far as it could go with its very limited schedule and limited coverage. I then negotiated a pricey taxi ride to Versailles. It was so worth the frustration, time, and cost.

François Guizot (1787-1874) was a remarkable figure in 19th century France: an esteemed historian, an accomplished diplomat and, under the reign of King Louis Philippe, from 1830 to 1848, he was responsible for much of the country’s domestic and foreign affairs. He has been a powerful example for his descendants and the Val-Richer has been maintained as something of a shrine to him. In the final weeks of her life, Dominique de Menil was still making notes about Guizot @menilcollection @aaknopf @randomhouse #guizot.com #frenchhistory #doublevisiondemenilbiography

| F R E N C H Q U A R T E R | #NOLA 🎺🥖🌶💕🌿Did you guys know that New Orleans gets its architectural influence from the French/ Creole and the Spanish? Back in time New Orleans used to be one of the fastest growing cities and one of the most fashionable under the French Duke of Orleans. After the Treaty of Paris it became part of the Spanish Empire, and even so, the people didn’t truly adopt the Spanish influence. New Orleans became French once more, and at last it was bought by the USA in the Louisiana Purchase back in 1803. Only when the Americans began to move up town was when the French influence started to die out. Baptiste Le Moyne, Sieur de Bienville gave New Orleans it’s architectural influence, which actually is a mix of French and American. Sometimes we forget how much history our towns hold, make sure to stop and learn a little more, every time you travel. There is so much knowledge to be gained. Have you ever visited this high spirited town? Make sure to stop by and try one of their iconic beignets and their creole food infusion. #jambalaya #interestingfacts •
