Typical shrine in the wall of an old country building. During the French Revolution, many manoirs and chateaux were destroyed and for decades the poor took many beautiful stones to incorporate in the building of very simple and small rural buildings. The stones forming this shrine come from a much older and grander building than the building they are now part of.

Back in Paris, for the third time this year. We visited Picpus Cemetery, the gravesite of one of my favorite Revolutionaries, Marquis de Lafayette (I loved him before @daveeddiggs). The Cemetery serves as a memorial to those who were killed in the "Great Terror" - the years after the French Revolution when Robespierre kept the guillotine in constant use. The grave has his many honors from France and the US, as well as a large bouquet from the Daughters of the American Revolution. 🇫🇷🇺🇸

Liberty leading the people (La liberté guidant le peuple) is painting by Eugène Delacroix commemorating the July Revolution of 1831, which toppled King Charles X of France. A woman personifying the concept and the Goddess of Liberty leads the people forward over a barricade and the bodies off the fallen, holding the flag of French Revolution - the tricolour flag, which remains France's national flag - in one hand and brandishing a bayonetted musket with the other. The figure is also viewed as a symbol of France and the French Republic known as Marianne.

Inktober day 16 !
🇬🇧 A little bit delayed because I draw it again after an idea @east_77 gave me on his comment on the one of Louis XVI from the 4th of October. Thank you for telling me Marie Antoinette, Queen of France, has been beheaded on the 16th ! I didn't know it and well, I love the idea of making one drawing for the Queen to match with the King ! So here is Marie Antoinette. She died with dignity during the French revolution. Haters gonna hate !
I also put the one previously made for the 16th right after the drawing (who was not really good actually). Just slide to see it ! 👑
.

On this day in 1793, Marie Antoinette went to the guillotine after a harrowing imprisonment and trial. Why is she still an object of fascination? I believe it's because she was such a complex creature. And well, the woman knew how to live with style.

An important reminder for any society: revenge is not the same as justice ☝🏻 On this day, October 16, #1793, the last French Queen Marie Antoinette was beheaded at the Place de la Révolution (now named Place de la Concorde) ⚜️ She was declared guilty of the 3 main charges against her: depletion of the national treasury, conspiracy against the external and internal security of the state, and high treason due to her activity in the interest of the enemy 😶 Even though this latter charge was enough to condemn her to death, a French queen had heretofore never been killed--at worst, she and her lawyers expected life imprisonment 😞(Unsurprisingly, it's also possible her trial was decided ahead of time.) Any book on Marie Antoinette will quickly reveal the cruelty of her trial, including false accusations of incest with her son 👎🏻
Last year, I visited the Conciergerie in Paris. The last place she was imprisoned before her death, she was held in an isolated cell and offered no privacy due to constant surveillance 👀 It was both moving and eerie to look into and contemplate her fate suggested by the mock cell currently on display--complete with an effigy clad in black 💭 Although one of its most famous inmates, hundreds of prisoners during the French Revolution were taken from the Conciergerie to be executed by guillotine at a number of locations around Paris ⚰️

Fine. Maybe Marie Antoinette never actually said, "Let them eat cake" (...or "Let them eat cupcakes"), but her presence in the Revolution as a symbol of monarchic decadence and her legacy as a doomed, naive and somewhat sympathetic figure make up for any misattributions. What would the last pre-Revolutionary French queen think if she knew her likeness graces bubble bath labels today?

I went to Oxford on Saturday to listen to four lectures all on the topic of Riot, Mystery and Mayhem in the 18th Century an they were so interesting! I learnt a lot of new information about a subject I had never previously studied and I am definitely going to be going to more of these in the future to get a flavour of other areas in history that I don’t get the chance to study in school:)
•
The main riots in the 18th century consisted of election mobs (to intimidate opponents) or food riots, as people protested economically. The riot act of 1715 was passed and only repealed in 1973, although the last time it was used was in 1919. This act allowed one hour to a gathering of 12 or more people to disperse or military intervention would ensue.
Key ‘riots’ or crowds in the 18th century include the religious riots of 1710, the Jacobean riot of 1715 and the St. George’s fields massacre of 1768 which became the first turning point in popular action as government attitudes to big crowds turned as they considered them now seditious assemblies with a purpose. This led to the political problem of what was a crowd vs a mob? EP Thomson, the historian, showed the morality of riots in how peasants felt they had the right to steal grain of merchants which was overpriced and they even often gave profits back to merchant once resold! There was also the issue of the revolt of the housewives where women in particular were portrayed as the ones initiating the mobs.

I’ll be posting some more detailed facts, stories and case studies I learnt during the next few days and weeks so there’s more to come! ✨✨
