My introduction to controversial Swedish noise punk band BRAINBOMBS occurred 14 years ago. Who introduced me? ALEC EMPIRE of ATARI TEENAGE RIOT! Here's the story: On Alec's MYSPACE (Remember MySpace?), he would post DJ mixes of recent performances. One particular performance, he was spinning some sick digital hardcore, hip hop, jungle (drum n bass for the young ones), and hardcore punk in this insanely, blistering mix. The song that stood out for me was "Die You Fuck" from BRAINBOMBS. I emailed his page asking what's name of the song because it was noisy and eviscerating. To my surprise, Alec personally email me back informing me who the track belonged to! Shortly after that conversation (I thanked him for the information, his contribution to all things music, and his activism. We also discussed the controversial 1999 concert ATR did in Seattle that yours truly participated in!), I went out seeking BRAINBOMBS where I found these release and some others I aren't posted. As controversial as 'prostitution is the oldest profession', BRAINBOMBS started in 1985. They GIVE ZERO FUCKS, their level of dissonance has no bounds, and have never shyed away from controversy! Part 'No Wave' wrecking ball, part old school hardcore punk, and part sadists, this band puts most punk bands to shame! Their music (and performances I've heard) is a bombast of 'tuned, detuned guitars', abrasive feedback, pounding repetitive beats, raucous sounds, and extremely, salacious lyrical themes (extreme sex, torture, death, drug abuse, etc.). BRAINBOMBS isn't about bluster or pandering to popularity. BRAINBOMBS don't care who you are and where you're from. Their mission is abundantly clear: shred everyone into confetti with their music BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY! If you aren't familiar with BRAINBOMBS and you're a fans of both noise and hardcore punk, I suggest you give them a listen. If you have weak constitutions, this band isn't for you or for the faint of heart! Whenever one-man destruction complex and noise tornado PRURIENT (Dominick Fernow) releases music, it's into the mind of a malevolent supergenius. None of his releases are the same in sound, texture, and brutality. Yet, the harsh noise always has a way of creeping in with brilliant results. Having said this, it shocked me that 2008's TIME BEGAN IN A GARDEN is the total opposite of Dominick Fernow's usual noise tantrums but still is PRURIENT. Let me explain: Instead for DOING recalcitrant noise on TIME BEGAN IN A GARDEN, Dominick surprises everyone by doing an entire minimalist, drone album. For the unfamiliar, drone music is music that uses a 'sustained or repeated sound and/or musical note'. An example-albeit lame-is when Kenny G played the longest sustained note (45 minutes, 47 seconds) in 1997 placing him in the Guinness Book of World Records. HOWEVER, unlike Kenny, drone music isn't smooth jazz and doesn't suck! TIME BEGAN IN A GARDEN is a 18-minute strange, psychological plunge into hell! Starting with 'Stun Gun Theory', the song is an ambient calm until you realize how discomforting the song makes you feel.  The psychological warfare continues with the scariest track (and the best on this release) is 'December Man' that delves into a drone-noise hybrid as Dominick screams and shouts like the sadist he is stranding us in the middle of Siberia-IN A BLIZZARD-with little escape! If we were fortune to escape the 'December Man', Fernow invites you to 'The Wine Cellar'. Ambient washes and barely audible feedback sets the tone while you relax and drinking a few glasses of your favorite vino. That, was your fatal mistake! Dominick provides a false sense of security as final track 'Spider Spins A Child' is total drone with a repeated fuzz synth bassline, echoed shrieks, and sustained metallic sounds. After listening to this album, we are mentally destroyed! It's a different release but our stress levels are extremely high. During the 1990s, the world faced reality with the Digital Hardcore onslaught from Deutschland with acrimonious results. For a plurality of people only assuming the scene revolved around Atari Teenage Riot-headed by Noisemeister-in-Chief ALEC EMPIRE-they're typically all wet and all wrong! Digital Hardcore Recording had many like-minded artists on their roster including artist SHIZUO. Like the majority of DHQ artists, the music was born out of the underground hardcore punk, noise, hardcore techno, and anarchists movements predominantly in Berlin. Berlin native SHIZUO (Government Name: David Hammer. Born 1973; Died 2011) was a product of these scenes and his unorthodox production skills caught the attention of Alec Empire. David was signed to the label. Shizuo's second release, 1997's SHIZUO VS SHIZOR is what DHQ is all about: broken/deconstruced beats, sampled punk and metal guitars, video game samples (circa Atari 2600/Nintendo NES/Sega Genesis), and radical, left-wing gravitas. The song (and my favorite) 'Punks' is a sampled hardcore punk track severely contorted, then reconstructed until it's an unrecognizable, dance masterpiece! Other great tracks are noise and breakbeat blunt-force trauma 'Braindead' and 'New Kick'. 'Blow Job' goes into experimental territory with a big heaping of JAPANOISE, whereas 'Crack Meets the Hammer' is full-on bleak, glitchy synths and psychological 'electro-aggro-demento' electronic music (I know....I've seen Shizuo live back in 1999). The remainder of the album goes from breakcore abnormality to harsh noise realness to psychopathic electro-punk giving the album unnerving balance and 'dark dance street cred'. I love this album and wish David could have created more before his untimely death in 2011. MOLOCH is a standing member of the notorious, POLITICALLY INCORRECT, and mysterious group. As usual, those people are grossly on the wrong side of music history! True, WILHELM HERICH would occasionally assist ANENZEPHALIA, but that doesn't make it a side-project; it just means a fellow like-minded artist helped out another! I bring this up because the defunct ANENZEPHALIA (Government Name: B. MOLOCH) was one of the first artists to record music for the legendary and infamous TESCO ORGANISATION separate from GENOCIDE ORGAN. Since B. MOLOCH's beginnings in 1991 until 2014 (including a one-time performance at the 30th Anniversary festival of TESCO ORGANISATION in October 2017), ANENZEPHALIA was one of the most dangerous and belligerent industrial noise/power electronics artist out there save only GENOCIDE ORGAN themselves! No topic was off limits and MOLOCH was unapologetic about it. His releases on TESCO were engaging, yet disturbingly violent. I can only sum up his sound as a "deadly, berzerker rampage of menacing vocals, oppressive layers of noise, distorted synths (beyond recognition), and nihilistic samples". LIVE FESTIVAL KARLSRUHE 8-10-1993 (Released 2006) is a prime instance of a live performance that's a bellicose assault of threatening noise, antagonistic screams, and brutal soundscapes never experienced even from the most ardent noise/power electronics artist! Vicious as ANENZEPHALIA was, the music was always the focal point  which addressed and lambasted the social ills of today. Although B. As a production studio master, industrial music 'chaos bringer', black metal fanatic, and Hospital Productions co-conspirator, Kris knows how to bludgeon total anxiety in our lives. His sonic assault are calculating and mesmerizing as they are scary where FALL WHERE THEY WOULD delivers it like multiple blows to the kneecaps with an aluminum bat! The psychological warfare starts with the pounding industrial noise "Seedings". My favorite tracks, "Eight of Cups", is a near-perfect 7 minutes of heavy power electronics/Electro-Industrial which is nightmarish and eviscerating. The final track, "Reasons", delivers clinical black drone and oppressive noise with such precision that the mere notion feel as if Kris is performing a vivisection on us gives us a nervous breakdown! Lovers of abstract music, IDM, and ambient music: A sweet release before 2017 ends! SILENT STRANGERS (@silentstrangers) just released COLLECTED LIVES 2017 (December 31, 2017; Bandcamp). DEATHPILE did it in 2004 only after releasing their masterpiece: the power electronics psycho-analysis of Cascadia's Green River Killer on G.R. Sadly, such is the (possible) exit of GREVIOUS (@six6six6six6six) who just dropped TWO stellar releases and arguably, some of his best work: CHANNEL and the self-titled GREVIOUS (December 20, 2017; Bandcamp). Taking a personal, dark turn, GREVIOUS throws his heart into these releases. Irradiated noise, crumbling power electronics, decapitating black noise, black drone, and petrifying ambient noise makes your discomfort all the more validating. On the self-titled GREVIOUS, there is a level of beautiful futility that is only matched by tsunamis of malevolence especially when guests WRITHE, GRUTESK (@grutesk), UMBRAL ASH (@umbralass), and BODY CHUTE join the "misery dance of death" on four of the 12 tracks. I identify with every song here especially the black drone confessional "Dead Like Me". Where the self-titled GREVIOUS is pure anger/self-loathing, CHANNEL displays a vulnerable side to GREVIOUS you never see coming! The 2-Track album is the REAL CONFESSIONAL (and my favorite of the two) of personally, scarred emotions evoked by blackened metal noise, overcurrents of feedback, and errie keyboard soundscapes. GREVIOUS screams his heart out as if he's cannot express his true feelings-only through music-because many "don't understand him". I totally sympathize as I feel many don't understand me from whence I was a kid to an adult! SUTCLIFFE JUGEND makes no apologies regarding their music and their infamous reputation. From the onset, SUTCLIFFE  antagonizes and lays waste to everyone and everything in their path with their "scorched earth" weapons of power electronics and noise. In their linear, holier-than-thou music minds, it was WHITEHOUSE that started it all! As usual, those people are on the wrong side of history! Noise Music has been around for over 100 years (Part of the DADA and BAUHAUS Movements), but it was 42 years ago where the "Modern Noise Movement" started, 5 years before WHITEHOUSE existed! No stranger to the avant-garde, the counter-culture, and doing music differently from the rest, Lou was one of the first (in my unhumbled opinion) "true alternative artists" who played by his own rules. Now, I am not suggesting that LOU REED is some perfect being or the sole artist being the paragon of doing things differently, but I am giving credit where credit is due! The band featured future GODFLESH members GC GREEN on bass, JUSTIN BROADRICK on vocals/drums and PAUL NEVILLE on guitars/vocals (Paul wasn't a full-fledged member of GODFLESH. He played guitar on 4 songs from STREETCLEANER, all tracks on the SLAVESTATE EP, and 1 song from PURE). Much of the sound from the FALL OF BECAUSE is attributed to the GODFLESH sound: guttural vocals, lo-fi guitar tunings, and macine-like drumming. There was only one demo release in 1986 called EXTIRPATE which is extremely hard to find. If anyone knows where one is available-in any format-please let me know 😊. In 1999, however, the compilation album LIFE IS EASY (1999; Invisible Records) was released that included demos, live tracks, and unreleased tracks from the band after they dissolved in 1987. Future songs from FOB would appear on the later GODFLESH albums: 'Devastator', 'Merciless', and 'Life in Pieces'. The standout track on here for me (albeit all are superfanstastic) is "Malewhoreslug". The song is heavily feedbacked, uneasy bass, and robot drumming. I am unsure who is singing-Paul or Justin-but the vocalist sings in diatribe mode and disgust towards a 'male slut' comparing him to a 'female slut'. Unsure if the band was addressing an actual person, or speaking generally. During the Roman Empire, the senior commanders practiced a cruel, but effective form of punishment on their soldiers to keep the discipline amongst their ranks. The punishment was a result of mutiny, desertion, or a significant loss to the enemy. That punishment? DECIMATION. In today's modern lexicon, we use the word to mean 'absolute destruction', which is further from the truth. In reality, "decimation" is Latin (decimatio; decem = ten). So, decimation is "10% removal". THE PRACTICE of DECIMATION DID NOT DISCRIMINATE! An enlisted soldier as well as an officer could be decimated through clubbing or stoning by their fellow peers in their ranks. Thankfully, this is not a standard practice today governing the men and women in uniform around the world. But, why do I bring this up? Well, IF I WAS CONSIDERING starting a noise/power electronics project, its focus would be on the the art of decimation, hence the name of the project:, A.O.D. (ART OF DECIMATION). I'm a lover of history. Hell, I have a degree in History! The sound would be dense layers of low-level distortions, belligerent synths, crushing feedback, with an eerie and fearful backdrop of electronic, string arrangements. There would zero vocals, screams, and inane effects. It would be all about the music textures and the feeling as though you're about to get decimated, even though you aren't a soldier! It wouldn't be noise for the sake of noise. When I posted the question "Is Noise Music the New Metal-Black?", it's a legitimate question. I will explain: When the metal origins started in the late 1960's, the genre utilized lower guitar tunings generating a heavier sound. The lyrics talked about the darkside of society. It was the anti-hippie music. By the 1970's and 1980's, disaffected youth identified with the dark lyrics, heavy guitars, and pounding drums. The topics went further into the dark realms of death, suicide, drug addiction, and Satanism, albeit some was tongue-in-cheek. By the 1990's til current, a change occurred in sound and lyricism where metal artist "are in tune with their emotions" translating into compressed sounds and the awful 'nu metal' genre. It seems today's 'metal' panders to corporations and the unwashed masses. The question is this: What happens to metal that's gone from 'the darkside to the new BUTTROCK?' I've been a metal fan since discovering KISS as a kid growing up in the 1970's. I've seen the transformation from bleakness to music Lady Gaga finds attractive! This is where noise music comes in. From its bellicose origins, noise music has been confrontational and unapologetic about it! The topics are an array of taboo topics, even the modern metal artist won't touch: serial killers, darkside of sex, death, torture, evisceration, murder, and many more. My obsession with Dominick Fernow aka noise eviscerator PRURIENT has no bounds! Dominick has helped me through some perilous times when I (personally), family, friends, and the world failed me. The haters of PRURIENT will say he has changed. WELL FUCKING DUH! Dominick has evolved by incorporating other sounds into his brash variants of noise, power electronics, harsh noise, drone, and dark ambient. Isn't that the fucking point of music: not to sound like a broken record on repeat? Of course, I am a noise purist. Yet, I'm NOT part of the "noise music elitists-zeitgeists kabal". The "elitists-zeigeist kabal" believe they are superior to everyone because they "only listen to the purest forms of noise music". Furthermore, they look down on the fans and artists who have the audacity to evolve. Those people are self-delusional CUNTS incapable of change. Noise-anarcharist CONTRAKTOR (@prison_city_noise) is always in constant rotation on my iPods (I own 3 that still function), my newer iPod Touch, and my phone (sorry iPhone snobs, I only use Android as my platform...😉). Every time I listen to CONTRAKTOR, they are visceral lessons in defiance, politics, and meta-violence. All three issues come full circle on his release DEFENSE CONTRAKTOR, (December 2016; Bandcamp).
CONTRAKTOR slices through (we) the listen on DEFENSE CONTRAKTOR like a scalpel ripping flesh without any anesthesia! The 2-Track album starts with the black noise/black drone/industrial noise inevitability of "You Will All Die". It's a morose look at a topic many fears (especially as it pertains to all gradations of war), but CONTRAKTOR delivers the topic with moments of unsettled calm with moments of beautiful malevolence making the first track full of subtle complexity, but reserved, textured nihilism. The second track, "Blood and Valor" gets straight to the point with atonal synths, bedraggled power electronics, and heavily distorted screams exclaiming that war (military conflict as well as the 'urban wars' in any city around the world) is an ugly thing regardless of what side you're on! A recent Queer Noise music discovery is BULLSHIT MARKET. That discovery happened earlier this year via the KANSAS CITY NOISE FEST 3 where BM performed. Unfortunately, I didn't attend the KCNF3, but with a name like BULLSHIT MARKET, I had to look more into this artist because the name alone is fucking awesome!

He was the second Gay Noise musician (The first being GRUTESK, @grutesk) I met always assuming I was the only gay (and black) man who listened and appreciated noise music opening the door (and my eyes/awareness) to other gay noise musicians. 3. SP addresses the homophobic, gay, and transgender issues that many (within the community) ignore or willfully refuse to acknowledge set to blistering industrial, industrial noise, and power electronics. 
SP is writing an upcoming novels/multimedia project. The first is called CYCLE. I'm all about the discovery new artists (to me) reaching new territories especially those in the noise community. A few posts ago, I introduced you to South Florida's black metal/black noise outfit ABSOLVER (@absolver_). One of their members, CHRISTOPH LOMBARDO, also is an accomplished musician in his own right: he's the "Noise Maker-in Chief" for ABSOLVER and does bookings for most of the noise events in South Florida. Also, Christopher has his own project, SILENT STRANGERS (@silentstrangers), that's a mix of abstract soundscapes, IDM, dark ambient, experimental atmospherics, and dark electronic music. Thanks to the peeps of ABSOLVER (whom Christopher is a member of), they told me about Christopher's importance and dedication to the noise scene, not just in Florida, but in the tight-knit noise community as a whole.
