One of the main reasons NARODNA ODBRANA created this Instagram account was to wax nostalgic about the music I grew up which influenced me, but also embracing the present and the future in sound, artistry, and awareness. My second reason was bringing a fan's perspective of noise music showing others that noise music isn't just mere feedback. There is true and absolute artistry in noise music and power electronics. I've tried elevating the genre from the 'fringes of music darkness' AND especially delivering noise music from the noise elitists/zeitgeists/snobs who are unwilling to adapt, change, and embrace their own future and/or destiny. One artist who truly embraces the past, present, and future of noise is M15H4P (@m15h4p). His recent releases, 0609 (November 15, 2017; Sunset Archive/Bandcamp) is nostalgia of a time that was important to him. The 23 minute 36 second (1-Track) song is M15H4P's most brutal and personal release, to date. Oddly (but genuinely) placed samples, copious amounts of feedback, harsh noise, turntabilism skills that rivals most old school DJ's, and distorted vocals encapsulates you as M15H4P take us on his journey back to his past, namely 2006-2009. I truly appreciate 0609 as it can bring YOU to the past that was important to you set to very coarse sounds! You hear M15H4P's vulnerability come out where it's a reminder of noise's past, but sheds light on where noise can be taken while telling everyone about the presumably good, bad, and indifference he lived in that 3 year span. More noise musicians need to release "personal albums" as a mean of their own catharsis and to show a vulnerable side (while still being abrasive). During the Roman Empire, the senior commanders practiced a cruel, but effective form of punishment on their soldiers to keep the discipline amongst their ranks. The punishment was a result of mutiny, desertion, or a significant loss to the enemy. That punishment? DECIMATION. In today's modern lexicon, we use the word to mean 'absolute destruction', which is further from the truth. In reality, "decimation" is Latin (decimatio; decem = ten). So, decimation is "10% removal". THE PRACTICE of DECIMATION DID NOT DISCRIMINATE! An enlisted soldier as well as an officer could be decimated through clubbing or stoning by their fellow peers in their ranks. Thankfully, this is not a standard practice today governing the men and women in uniform around the world. But, why do I bring this up? Well, IF I WAS CONSIDERING starting a noise/power electronics project, its focus would be on the the art of decimation, hence the name of the project:, A.O.D. (ART OF DECIMATION). I'm a lover of history. Hell, I have a degree in History! The sound would be dense layers of low-level distortions, belligerent synths, crushing feedback, with an eerie and fearful backdrop of electronic, string arrangements. There would zero vocals, screams, and inane effects. It would be all about the music textures and the feeling as though you're about to get decimated, even though you aren't a soldier! It wouldn't be noise for the sake of noise. When I posted the question "Is Noise Music the New Metal-Black?", it's a legitimate question. I will explain: When the metal origins started in the late 1960's, the genre utilized lower guitar tunings generating a heavier sound. The lyrics talked about the darkside of society. It was the anti-hippie music. By the 1970's and 1980's, disaffected youth identified with the dark lyrics, heavy guitars, and pounding drums. The topics went further into the dark realms of death, suicide, drug addiction, and Satanism, albeit some was tongue-in-cheek. By the 1990's til current, a change occurred in sound and lyricism where metal artist "are in tune with their emotions" translating into compressed sounds and the awful 'nu metal' genre. It seems today's 'metal' panders to corporations and the unwashed masses. The question is this: What happens to metal that's gone from 'the darkside to the new BUTTROCK?' I've been a metal fan since discovering KISS as a kid growing up in the 1970's. I've seen the transformation from bleakness to music Lady Gaga finds attractive! This is where noise music comes in. From its bellicose origins, noise music has been confrontational and unapologetic about it! The topics are an array of taboo topics, even the modern metal artist won't touch: serial killers, darkside of sex, death, torture, evisceration, murder, and many more. The SOP of noise music hasn't changed. In fact, noise musicians continually pushes the envelope into territories of sound and darkness that makes metal artists sound like Justin Timberlake. Not wanting to sound redundant, but noise music is part of my eternal catharsis! But, I never discussed which noise artist provides me the most catharsis. Although I love all things noise where most noise artist calms me, only a few acts have truly calmed me down from the point of burning this world to the ground. Those acts are my soul eaters PEDESTRIAN DEPOSIT, noise-anarcharist CONTRAKTOR (@prison_city_noise), noise tornado PRURIENT, and genius uber-alles MERZBOW. Now, I can add to my list of catharsis: LIGATURE IMPRESSION.
A recent discovery, LIGATURE IMPRESSION (and his other projects BODY CARVE and GUTTER BLOAT, @gutterbloat) is some of the most volatile noise and power electronics. When LI isn't issuing dread and trepidation, his brutality is one of my calming forces. And, that cathartic nature especially takes place on the BACULUM/LIGATURE SPLIT cassette (September 2016; Grain Belt/PHAGETAPES, @phagetapes).
The BACULUM side (track "Auto-Erotic Synthetic Ejaculation) is just straight abusive and sexually sinister. Heavy concussion grenade blasts of black metal noise, an evil (but punishing) synth middle, only to steamroll us at the end with enraged, visceral static then silence. It's unpleasantness at its most pinnacle and psycosexual.
The LIGATURE IMPRESSION side is the hard calm after the vicious BACULUM sonic beating. Hard, lurking synths and guttural-to-bellowing vocals cuts though the belligerence to deliver a 'violently happy climax' with the tracks "Overstimulation", "Demulcent", and the detached hyper-noise of "Nerve Damage".
Thank you LIGATURE IMPRESSION for adding to my therapy against the stupidity called this world. I appreciate that such bellicose music has the opposite effect. With the plethora of posts about my noise obsession/noise-anarcharist CONTRAKTOR, why do I clamour to his vitriolic take on noise and power electronics?
To answer that question, NARODNA ODBRANA would need to go back 2 years ago. I discovered CONTRAKTOR (@prison_city_noise) by accident on Bandcamp searching for noise and power electronics. Benjamin's (his government name) CONTRAKTOR came up almost immediately. And with a name like CONTRAKTOR, the music has to be good, right? So, I sampled some of his music. I was immediately blown away with his 'controlled unhinged anger', the abrasive, unpleasantness of his noise/power electronics, Ben's uncompromising rhetoric (far-left politics), and his relentless, unapologetic attitude about the music he makes. I immediately signed up for CONTRAKTOR's subscription on Bandcamp!
Let's face it, many (not all) in the noise community tends to go to cliché with taboo topics about morbidity, sexual depravity, drug excess, death, and serial killers. Don't get it twisted: I love these topics and is a main reason I love noise music, but can there be other 'sacred cow' topics to address? CONTRAKTOR does which is another reason I love his music. Most of Ben's topics delves into the politics of greed, sex, the environment, the current state of the Union, social injustice, etc. Yes, CONTRAKTOR does address the 'taboo noise topics', but it isn't forced or over-reaching.
These are some more of CONTRAKTOR releases that I love and cherish because I identify and share his anger with all that's fucked in the world. And Benjamin manifests it into a 'sonic hand grenade' where I wouldn't hesitate throwing it at the normal class with impunity!
