External ventricular drains (EVDs) have been used for the relief of hydrocephalus for well over a century. EVDs use by Lundberg to study intracranial pressure in brain tumor patients demonstrated their additional value as a physio- logical measurement tool. Presently, EVDs are used for such a wide variety of indications that their insertion may be the most commonly performed cranial neurosur- gical procedure. For many years, EVDs were the only type of reliable ICP monitor available and were considered the gold standard for measurement of intracranial pressure. Today both EVDs and intraparenchymal ICP monitors are recommended for this purpose. #EVD#NeuroCriticalCare#ICU#Neurosurgery#NeuroAF
STOP USING VANCO AND ZOSYN FOR CAP 👉 Not enough new antibiotics are in the research and development pipeline to meet the challenge of burgeoning antibiotic resistance, especially with tuberculosis (TB), the World Health Organization (WHO) warned in a new report released today.
Although several dozen antibiotics are now in that pipeline, most are modifications of existing antibiotic classes and few "are likely to cover a broader range of resistant pathogens," the report stated. #Medscape#Resistance#Bacteria#WHO#Antibiotics#ID#Pipeline
A new study in Clinical Infectious Disease reported that bezlotoxumab, given with antibacterials for Clostridium difficile, could be effective as a preventive treatment for C difficile infection (CDI). A multinational group of investigators from the United States and Germany conducted the MODIFY I and MODIFY II clinical trials to evaluate the safety and efficacy of bezlotoxumab, a human monoclonal antibody to C diffiicile, and found that participants given active treatment had reduced rates of rehospitalization at 30 days. Today, I had the honor and privilege of receiving my white coat! Texas A&M is one of the one few pharmacy schools that waits until the second year of school to distribute them. It feels so good knowing all the hard work had paid off. It's moments like this make all the tears, endless stress, mountains of work, and sleepless nights all worth it! Thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate this special day with me ❤ #AggiePharmacists#FuturePharmD
