#MonteCarloMonday | The galley on the MC6 allows for the host to be part of the party, and the large wrap-around seating in the adjacent cockpit allows for as many as 12 guests to host - the more the merrier!
Oh hey look, I'm writing a review for the first time in a fucking year. Whoop-de-doo, Basil!
The reason I am doing so is because #Ultraluminous by #KatherineFaw is such a stupidly brilliant work of fiction that I had to peek out of my little corporate mole-hole (damn did my job give me arthritis of the parietal lobes) and tell y'all to GET ON THIS SHIT.
K, also Katinka, also Karina, also Katya, is a sex worker who peddles #thegirlfriendexperience to her cadre of johns, identified by profession, not names because this girl is all business. Even the men she may love, or once loved, or maybe loves are identified by their career.
The narrator is not a ditz, nor a wretched orphan, nor a social-climbing shrew, nor a hooker with a heart of gold. But who is she? She possesses a characteristic or two of the sex-working caricature, but she is singular. Perceptive but aloof, fascinated by the patterns of life but flighty, beautiful but possessive of a deep understanding of ugliness.
Faw's narrative style is as particular as her antihero. That this book has chapters feels like either a publisher trying to drag a comb through a massively unruly (in only the very best of ways) work or the author taking a big old whizz on modern literary structure. Either way, I love it. This is not a "story." These aren't event vignettes. K simply moves from one bedroom to the next, one overpriced restaurant or Barney's dressing room to the next, not caring to tell us when she's done with each of her memories or present entanglements. She's not here for the reader; she's here for herself and some heroin. You have to hop inside her and look out into the routine of her vividly bleak world, and if you blink you might just get lost.
Ultraluminous is not only one of my favorites reads of the year, but it has become one of my favorite books. Period.
I recently read #LiskaJacobs ' #Catalina as well, which I can recommend if you're looking for more narrative cohesion and just as much general sluttiness. (I usually am.) Elsa returns to her native #California after losing her job at the #MoMA . What does she miss more, her assistant job with its aesthetic comforts or her affair with her married
Seeing a dolphin in the wild is 1 million times better than seeing them in a tiny tank. These wild dolphins came into the harbour as they enjoy the social interaction they get from the people there. This one was showing off its fresh catch- a huge snapper #dolphin#australia#nevergetsold
