Wait, what are purple sweet potatoes?
🥔🍠🥔 I can not say I always knew what they were, but about 5 years I discovered this amazing root at the store! At first I just thought it was a colorful sweet potato, until I started doing some research! Purple sweet potatoes are high in the flavonoids: cyanidnin and peonidin. These two anthocyanin have been shown to reduce inflammation by lowering COX-2 levels, MCP-1, and IL-6! For my friends in medicine, we know these inflammatory markers all too well! At first I was skeptical, I figured all the studies were in vitro with 1000x concentrations, but to my relief there are human studies showing the effects on participants’ metabolic factors, hepatic function tests, and inflammatory markers. 📜🗂📜
One thing that fascinates me is that these are one of the staples in the Okinawan Diet! A population that is known for longevity, reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, and reduced risk of other chronic age-associated diseases. 💥🔥💥
As always I love answering your questions! Attached are a few of the articles I used to make this post.

The great Red Russian #kale experiment continues. So far this will be the second snowstorm after temperatures in the single digits and yet it limps on. How long will it last?! I got this as a start last spring from @sowtrueseed
Since my kiddos are still fighting their fevers @awelky was kind enough to work from home so I could get out of the house for our planning meeting.
I’ll be honest it’s hard to stay on topic when you like the people you work with!
Also, you should have #BUSinessmeetings at Hi Lo’s, they’re the best 😉 #work#planning
I am reading Wild & Free and it’s 😍! Just the title gets me - A hope filled anthem for the woman who feels she is both too much and never enough! 🙋🏻♀️ We mean the world to Him (God) - not because we’re good or we’ve earned it, but because we are His treasure, the apple of His eye, the daughters He is coming back for. “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!” (1 John 3:1)
Also do you think the library will be mad that I spilled my cup of water all over the book? Librarians kinda scare me. Does that make the book mine? 🤞
Up early to water the garden as going to be a hot one ! 41 degrees (105f) I hope for those effected by the heat today you all keep cool and our gardens survive the heat 🙏☀️ Stay safe 👩🌾🌱🔥 #41degrees#melbourneweather
Made some salve today out of the calendula oil I’ve been making, I also added frankincense and lavender essential oils to it as well! All of these ingredients have great benefits for a multitude of skin issues, which are usually worsened with the winter! I also put amethyst in one for a little bump!
🌶🌨☃️❄️ The best part of winter is making lunches with all those amazing summer preserves. Make your way towards a salad of pickled peppers, roasted corn, spinach, pumpkin seeds and cilantro lime kefir dressing by making my marinated peppers: https://goo.gl/4wcaXn (link in bio as well)
Our gorgeous friends @panton_vineyard have the most beautiful garden on the Mornington Peninsula. It makes us so happy to see the fruit of their labour (pardon the pun 😏) grown in beautiful remineralised soil with #ecodust 🌱
If you found space to plant Rosellas, Hibiscus sabdariffa, with any luck they are starting to fruit. This West African native, is a joy to grow! The plants and fruits are attractive, have no pest problems, are hardy and productive. Using the fruits to make delicious tea, jam and cordial is also relatively easy.
The tea is very similar in flavour to rosehips and high in Vitamin C. Mix with lemongrass, lemon verbena and dried orange peel for a seriously delicious cuppa! For more information and recipes, head to our website (link in bio) #rosella#growyourowntea#hibiscus
During the summers we host freedom dinners (we invite friends and family and have everyone donate $ to @rescuefreedom to save a seat) in our mini orchard. And as it usually turns out friends bring friends, the table fills up and we have the best evening sitting under the lights, enjoying home cooked goodness, and feeling so blessed to be part of a table of people who were simply brave enough to do something different for dinner.
I never want those evenings to end. Sometimes I leave the lights on just because I cannot bring myself to turn off the loveliness.
Over the holidays I ran into one of the gals that joined us for dinner last summer. She had been in the middle of chemo treatments when she came all decked out in her Seahawks finest. You never would have known that she was walking through such a tough season, she was full of joy. When I saw her last month she told me ‘dinner in your orchard was the highlight of my year’. I felt so humbled and honored... and speechless.
This thing that brings me so much joy, these dinners that are changing lives for those caught in human trafficking are also touching lives here in our community. It makes every ounce of the behind the scenes nitty gritty work worth it when you realize that the thing that you were created to love was placed within you for deep deep purpose.
Friends, fill your tables. Don’t worry about perfection, worry about the people. They need your invitation. #dinnerchangeseverything#orchard#dinnerintheorchard
