Variations on a theme;
The standard WW2 British civilian-issue gas mask was a simple affair, consisting of a two-piece can-like cylindrical filter fitted to a thin rubber face mask with a single clear plastic eye-piece and a cotton webbing harness. You simply stick your chin into it and pull the harness down over the back of your head.
Available in three sizes, it was issued in a heavy manilla cardboard box with 'TOP' helpfully embossed on the top of the lid, instructions for use printed inside, and holes either side through which the user threaded a piece of string to form a rudimentary shoulder strap.
Being cardboard, the boxes soon got wet, torn and tattered, and inevitably a small industry rapidly grew up making more robust and attractive gas mask carriers for sale to the public. Here are a few.
Clockwise, we have the mask itself, then the original box; a Rexine bag designed to cover the entire box; a biscuit-tin-like metal alternative, ideal for school kids; and finally two rather classy handbag-like conical affairs in canvas and leather respectively. The last of these is like an evening bag and has a separate compartment for a purse or similar.
These distinctively-shaped bags still crop up from time to time at car boot sales, although less frequently than they used to, and once you know what they are you can spot them a mile off.
From my collection.
This was AFTER doing a mile and doing 6x100 meters on the track. I’m very dehydrated! HOW IS IT 80 DEGREES IN MID DECEMBER IN LOS ANGELES?! I HATE THE HEAT! I hate this constant desert climate! Glad I wore my mask as it’s windy and very dusty with debris. I drank a GALLON of Crystal Geyser before coming here and I’m still dehydrated! Anyway, this was AFTER doing sprints and I’m not wearing cleats nor sprint shoes, so Not much traction and I’m still Recovering from last sprint. I was a Receiver in High school football. Here I am doing a 40 yard post(started inside the end zone, phone set up at 50 yard line). I’m fast, but I’m dehydrated. How the hell is it 80 DEGREES in mid December?! I’m still faster than most dudes, despite all this. I need water!!!!!!!! #calabasas#football#field#sprints#sprinter#gasmask#hot#fast#fitness#dehydrated#themanbehindthemask#trackandfield#widereciever#routes
WW2 T-35 italian gas mask. During the war in Italy the fear of an air attack with gas was great. The T-35 was intended for the civil defence, in fact it was very comfortable e resistant. The glasses were made in unbreakable glass and they allowed a wide view.
