The foothills of the Andes mountains near the southern coast of Peru were captured by the Kompsat-2 satellite.
The Andes stretch about 7000 km from Venezuela down South America’s west coast to the top of Argentina. The mountain rage is the result of the Nazca and Antarctic tectonic plates moving under the South American plate – a geological process called ‘subduction’. This process is also responsible for the Andes range’s volcanic activity.
Running across the centre of the image we can see a patchwork of agricultural plots along what appears to be a source of water runoff from the mountains – although there looks to be little to no water present when this image was captured. This area is extremely dry, as evident in the sparse vegetation.
Nearby to the southwest of the area pictured is the site of the famous Nazca lines (not visible) – a group of geoglyphs depicting a monkey, spider, hummingbird and other designs. Scratched on the surface of the arid plain, the figures spread over 280 m in length, while some geometrical shapes stretch for kilometres.
The Korea Aerospace Research Institute’s Kompsat-2 satellite acquired this image on 4 May 2011. ESA supports Kompsat as a Third Party Mission, meaning it uses its ground infrastructure and expertise to acquire, process and distribute data to users.

After a long, windy & bumpy 14hr bus ride from Cusco to Nazca, we saw the amazing Nazca Lines and took a heap of terrible photos to prove it!

El mono #NazcaLines #Peru #nazcaLines #Peru. The Nazca Lines are a series of large ancient #geoglyphs in the Nazca #Desert, in southern Peru. The largest figures are up to 370 m long. They were designated as a #UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994. The high, arid plateau stretches more than 80 km between the towns of Nazca and Palpa on the Pampas de Jumana, about 400 km south of Lima. Although some local geoglyphs resemble Paracas motifs, scholars believe the #Nazca Lines were created by the Nazca culture between 500 BC and 500 AD. The figures vary in complexity. Hundreds are simple #lines and #geometric shapes; more than 70 are #zoomorphic designs of animals, such as birds, fish, llamas, jaguars, and monkeys, or human figures. Other designs include #phytomorphic shapes, such as trees and flowers

The Nasca lines are geoglyphs of animals, plants and geometric patterns that measure between 50 and 300 meters each and can only be seen from above. The drawings were made 2000 years ago by removing stones and dirt and thus revealing a different colored terrain that exposed the patterns. There have been different theories but today most agree that they were ceremonial spaces where the Nasca entered into contact with their gods and held rituals related to water and fertility for crops. This is the “big hill” heading west out of Correctionville toward Sioux City. It also serves as part of the Landscape that Native Americans have used for 1600 years as evidenced by recently uncovered geoglyphs and artifacts. The highway will soon be 4 lane all the way across the state of Iowa.
