Charlotte @tuppencehapenny was inspired by the outfit worn by Catherine Deneuve in the French film “8 Women” - this dress was on her to-sew list for *years*. The amazing teal wool doubleknit fabric was purchased @bandjfabrics in New York in 2014 (with this dress in mind), and she was lucky enough to find a perfect tonal match silk charmeuse on Goldhawk Road. The pattern is based on the boat neck bodice from @gertie18’s #gertiesultimatedressbook (her fourth or fifth dress using this bodice!), with a number of modifications for fit and the v-neckline. The collar is just two straight bias-cut strips of the silk satin, which she draped in place for the pleats; the cuffs are hand drafted. 📸 @newts_shoots Charlotte is ready for #dressfriday •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••#gerti18#sewinginspiration#bandjfabrics#newtsshoots#sewingdresses#isewmyclothes

So this is what I've been busy with for the last months, sewing my own wedding dress which has been a dream of mine since I learned to sew as a kid. I hope I've been able to channel some of my mormor/grandma's (who was a seamstress) spirit in to it. I'm really exited about sewing more garments (with less hand stitching tho 😬). Pattern is made from Gertie's Ultimate Dress Book (Basic Bodice/Strapless Bodice and Three-Quarter Circle Skirt) by @gertie18. #sewing#diyweddingdress#gertiesultimatedressbook#weddingdress#retroweddingdress (Pic is from last week and without a petticoat. I wore a one layer petticoat to fill out the skirt for the wedding.)
Beehive dress! My own pattern, the basic bodice from #gertiesultimatedressbook with a basic dirndl skirt, made up in lovely @rae.ritchie fabric! I spend a lot of time making the insides nice and detailed! Shoes are from Morocco. The last photos were just for fun, my husband took one extra and my daughter wanted to be in them! Her own dress is all dirty, but she's beautiful and knows how to have fun!
On Friday it's back to Oxford for my masters which meant all my half-finished projects needed to get done before I get sent a reading list (aka everything needed zips). The dress on the left is the Surplice Bodice from #gertiesultimatedressbook with a chiffon pleated skirt and matching bag. I'm going to wear this to my next ball! The middle outfit is the Box Pleated Circle Skirt the same dress book, plus a 40s Blouse from #gertiesewsvintagecasual . The wiggle dress on the right is also from #gertiesultimatedressbook . And yes, my favourite colour is blue.
I made the secretary dress from Gertie's Ultimate dress book. I messed up the collar so I removed it. I am a fan of her book. I hardly needed any alterations, compared to other brands, yay. I decided to wear the necklace my sister gave me for this pic. #gertiesultimatedressbook#sewing
Back at my sewing machine after 6 months away and it feels so gooood! I was having withdrawals. Now I'm working on really fitting myself and drafting my pattern block. My plan is to make all my garments in a couple patterns just different fabric prints, into the foreseeable future. I know my lifestyle and I know what I like! Bodices pattern is from #gertiesultimatedressbook#machinewithdrawal
We've finally had a fitting for the butterfly dress. I'm amazed how tight the armholes on the basic bodice from #gertiesultimatedressbook really are! I've already shaved 1,5 cm off and now it seams I need to remove another centimeter. My friend still didn't see the dress - I was a meanie and boud her eyes 😄 So looking forward to see her face, when she sees her finished dress! 👏👏👏
Day 11 of #sewphotohop : why I sew. My day job is pretty stressful and generally low on instant gratification. Sewing helps me feel like I've accomplished something tangible that I can be proud of-and can't be unexpectedly destroyed by the political whims of the day. This is a photo of me (far right) and the rest of the US delegation to the Asian Development Bank annual meeting in May of this year. We had dozens of meetings, including three finance ministers and a prime minister. Also, I totally made that dress 💪🏼#whyisew#homesewist#madebyme @houseofpinheiro @mccallpatterncompany #gertiesultimatedressbook
#sewphotohop theme today is Past Era ✂️👗Pretty much every thing I sew and wear is vintage inspired. Style wise, my favourite eras are the 1940s, '50s and '60s. The 1950s silhouette of this @gertie18 dress is a particular favourite. This surplice dress pattern is from #gertiesultimatedressbook and the (flamingo) fabric from @sewoveritlondon - who are today's sponsors.
