This was my suitcase as I packed to return home from holiday - I was quite surprised to see that I made everything here! I was also happy to see so much colour and so many dresses, my packed wardrobe on my last holiday was pretty much all plain black mix’n’match separates, this is so much better. About half of these items are made from Designer Stitch patterns, the rest are variations from Gertie’s Ultimate Dress Book. @designerstitch #willowkimono#ravanna#gypsydress @gertie18 #gertiesultimatedressbook#gertiebygretchenhirschfabric#holidaypacking
I need your help!!! I don't know which piping scheme I want to go with! (Details as to why I need a piping scheme to begin with in my latest blog post, link in profile). Imagine the scheme where the arrows point in the first image, then tell me which of the three you like best! Thanks! #beginspired#gertiesultimatedressbook#sewing#2018makenine
Confession... I didn't do any sewing today. What!? I know. Most sewists live for the weekends to be able to pound through their latest projects and dream garments because they work all week and only have nights and weekends for their passion (I will not be calling it a hobby... that makes it sound like something I do for fun when I'm bored. It's not, my sewing has a purpose). I, however, am lucky enough to have a husband who is able to support not only our household, but, also my passion (fabric is not cheap!), so although many weekends throughout this journey will be used for some sewing, it is not priority as I am able to sew pretty much whenever I want. I did LOOK at my project... and I decided that I'm going to attempt the seams without the grading. I believe that since it is a gathered top there is room to stretch the size 4 top to the size 6 bottom. I also did a little reading and a little dreaming. I grabbed my Complete Photo Guide to Sewing (something I bought around 2009 and has been sitting neatly in a closet ever since) and found out just how useful some of the tips could be. I also did a little research in decent books to invest in, and luckily at least one of them I can check out at the library before dropping dollars on it. Enough of the boring stuff though, I also want to show you my BEGIN project for this month! I haven't started it yet, but I have it all thought out. You won't believe where the inspiration came from... my husband and I watched Kong: Skull Island and this dress just called to me. The following images show the maship I plan to do to make the bodice as close as I can. I want to take the neckline from the blue floral/red wool dress and put it on the bodice of the red floral dress. #beginspired#beginspiration#sewing#gertiesultimatedressbook#memade#2018makenine
I’m loving everyone’s #2018makenine posts, and honored to see so many of my patterns included! (I get a real thrill seeing the library of patterns that I’ve built up over the years in my books, for Butterick, and now my new indie line.) As for me, I’m busy making more patterns! I just scheduled the next #charmpatterns photoshoot, and there are more Butterick #patternsbygertie coming your way too. Can’t wait to show you what I’ve been up to, and to see all your gorgeous new garments! #sewcialists#sewing#charmpatternsbygertie#gertiesultimatedressbook
@gertie18 I'm so glad to have received Gertie's Ultimate Dress Book this Christmas! I've only just started reading it and it's already inspired many new creations (that have yet to be made). I'm hoping to finish a project before going back to school next week!
p.s. that may or may not be a petticoat and a mickey mouse overall dress but you didn't hear it from me😉
Happy New Year, everyone! 🥂🎉❤️ I suppose it’s time to take down the tree now. 🎄
Here is my NYE dress, which is one of my last makes from 2017 - I used @gertie18’s modification on the sweetheart bodice from the Ultimate Dress Book, combined with a 3/4 circle skirt and a basic gathered skirt overlay (same as the mint dress I made earlier in the year, just a different neckline). A lot of people said it reminded them of cat ears! 🐱
Ewan is building his new Lego kits he got for Christmas, while I cut out a couple of pattern muslins. One for the schoolhouse tunic by Sew Liberated, the other for the basic bodice from Gertie's book, which will become a fitting sloper.
#spotlight gift card + #gertiesultimatedressbook + sale fabric = one happy gal! Next project - the Floral Surplice Dress. New techniques for me will be the surplice bit & side pleats. I have successfully sewn box pleats so I'm thinking the side pleats schools be easy for me. Could I have chosen a more similar fabric! #bitchesbestitchin
GERESERVEERD € 13,25 gloednieuw, dubbel Kerstcadeau. Bij aankoop steek ik er graag een stofje bij! Heel mooi en vooral ook duidelijk vormgegeven, naast de vele patronen vind je er een volledig hoofdstuk over hoe jurken van een voering te voorzien in terug #gertiesultimatedressbook
Pretty chuffed with my first dress from @gertie18 Ultimate Dress Book. I took the boat neck bodice and 3/4circle skirt and made it up in this pretty Rose & Hubble Christmas bauble fabric.
I chose the circle skirt over a gathered or pleated one so as to avoid any volume at the waist.
I took my time finishing seams and edges to get a really neat look and hemmed with bias tape which worked really well too.
Perfect for last full day of school tomorrow.
I'm modeling the Xmas present for my friend Dominika: the butterfly dress! 🎊🎊🎊Dominika is taller, slimmer, with a reasonably sized bust, which is at least 5cm higher than mine... 😒 😆 So for me, the dress is too tight and too long... and I still love it!!! 😍 I definitely need to make one for myself - luckily I've got enough of this beautiful fabric left👏👏👏
This is a basic bodice in size 8 from #gertiesultimatedressbook with a self drafted skirt with pockets ( which I also made based on what I learned from @gertie18 's awesome beginner-tutorial for gathered skirts on YouTube). #2017makenine#retrosewing#vintagesewing#xmaspresent
Trying out synthetic whalebone boning for the first time. While I agree that spiral steel would be preferred for structure, I wanted to avoid potentially conductive metal. As it turns out, this stuff is very cool and I found out "accidentally" that it can be sewn through 😋 Turned out to be a lifesaver and saved me from starting and stopping stitches quite a bit as various design elements in this dress have evolved as I've worked on it. Surprisingly soft for being as stiff as it is. And washable! #boning#syntheticwhalebone#evolvingdesign#dress#partydress#holidayparty#sparkle#gertiesultimatedressbook
Last day of #OWOP17 maybe next year I will have a complete set of 7 ... nonetheless the three #princessseam dresses I have made so far are as versatile as the pattern they are made with and I love how well the bodice can be fitted with such a neat finish ... this dress was a bit of a hack as it is meant to to be fastened with a zip down the back, but I decided to try out #buttons down the front instead! I love experimenting with patterns and creating new things 😊 it's been lots of fun styling some of my #memade items this week! #fitslikeaglove#sewexcited#floraldresses#gertiesultimatedressbook#memadewardrobe @ohsewquaint @sewisfaction
