About our Professor
Vlad is a 3rd degree black belt. Vlad started training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu 20 years ago, and received his black belt in 2008 from one of Rolls Gracie original Five6 black belts Romero "Jacare" Cavalcanti. We are lucky to have Vladimir here teaching in Ames Iowa.
I started Martial Arts to be able to defend myself from people bigger than me. A lot of silly #martialartists like to claim that size doesn't matter, but unfortunately physics is a thing. My instructor #johnnyleesmith used to say, "Size is an advantage, but it doesn't have to be the advantage." It's easy to make excuses, and only #fight in your weight class. My favorite thing to do is train with my biggest, toughest, and most technical #trainingpartners and competing in #absolutedivision tournaments. #winning is nice, but the ultimate goal is #selfdefense . There is no better way to do that than training to win with a disadvantage every day!

Thanks for the class @ms_daemonette and thanks for the rolls ladies @omel93 ! @urijahfaber , I heard you have a whole series of guillotine chokes...you should come show the intro class! Pretty please! #mmatraining#gijiujitsu#nodaysoff#wegohard
Looking forward to watching my client Parker Lapp participate in this bjj event. He works out 7 days per week and trains all out. Competition to me is a celebration of all the hard work a athlete has put into any sport they have chosen. #bjj#grappling
Today Callie became a true official Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Gray belt promoted by Professor Iury Debs. This is a belt that takes a lot of hard work, dedication and time! She has learned so much since coming to this De La Riva school and being trained under the Professor as well Coach Joe! She has had a lot to prove to be a true gray belt and she knew the time that was needed and that these belts are not to be just given they're to be EARNED! Even though she has been injured for 6 weeks she has watched the practices so intensely soaking in the drills and watching her teammates and learning every chance she's had, the pride she has today for herself and her hard work is inspiring to see on her face! Congratulations Callie for being an official De La Riva and IBJJF gray belt! OSS!
