Here, a baby “eater of twigs” in the valley of Jackson Hole lives up to its nickname. The word “MOOSE” actually comes from an Eastern US Algonguian language for “one who trims or cuts smoothly”, apparently referring to the tidy way these large deer prune twigs and strip bark off of trees. Which seems an oddly understated choice of names for such a startlingly huge, humped animal with an impossibly large nose, mule ears, gangly stilt legs, giant cloven hooves, a weirdly dangling sac of furry skin hanging from its neck, an unexpectedly powerful ability to swim and dive, and an enormous seventy-pound pair of branched hard weapons growing out of its head… “Hey, notice how this creature cleanly and smoothly trims twigs and strips bark from trees…let’s call it that.” I don’t know; that’s just not the first thing I notice when I see this animal…but hey, it’s a really good skill. Carry on, baby Twig Eater. ----------------------------------------------------- #alcesalces#alces#moosecalf#jacksonhole#gtnp#wyomingwildlife#winterwildlife#grandtetonnationalpark#alcesamericanus
