Day 2 with Hopes and I am back on team amp distortion.
We tried my Laney GH100L, 80’s Laney AOR, Marshall JCM800 and Peavey 6505+ with a bunch of different overdrive pedals to shape the tone. We paired each amp with a different overdrive and recorded a pass through a couple of sections of a song with each to find which we liked best. We initially paired:
Laney GH100L & Seymour Duncan 805
Laney AOR & Boss Blues Driver
Marshall JCM800 & Keeley Oxblood
Peavey 6505+ & OBNE Fault
Everyone liked the Laney GH100L best so I then set up all the overdrives in front of it to see if we could beat the tone we already had! The guys really liked the aggression of the Fault, but it was a little too bitey on the extended chords, I tried to match this tone using my slightly softer sounding Keeley Oxblood and we loved it!
The guitar we used was my Fender Jaguar and we ran into my Orange 2x12 for a chunky, full midrange tone.
Help me name my latest PCB!
Latest project is a small, 1 watt test amp that gives some nice cleans with a real 12ax7 valve for a little bit of authentic warmth if you push it. Loads of extra features to experiment with including my favourite crunch circuit added before the pre-amp and pads to swap it out for your own favourite boost or drive. Tone control sat between the pre-amp and power-amp and a simple effects loop to offer even more scope for testing other pedal builds. Headphone and speaker out options too!
