It’s Remicade day! The beauty of having excellent health insurance coverage(bc Bozzuto takes good care of their own) is that the nurse can just come to the house to hook me up. Immunosuppressants have their very unfortunate side effects, but they get the job done. I was 132 pounds in July of zero muscle and bone, I’m back to my normal 157 walking weight now and training as much as my body allows. Not completely there but slowly moving forward to the ultimate goal of remission and getting back in the ring. 4 weeks post op and I just completed my first full day back at the office 💻☕️

I went into the day knowing that I was going to play it by ear - if I was feeling tired or my bag was bothering me, I would head home and finish the day remotely. I found that my energy levels were pretty good though, I could focus well and pain was a nonissue ✔️
.
My bag was bothering me a bit yesterday so I was hoping I wouldn’t be dealing with stinging mid meetings. Thankfully my Imodium and fiber bar, which I had this morning before I left, seemed to thicken things up really well and I only had to empty my bag once during the day 👍🏻
.
I’m finding that it’s all about experimenting. Figuring out a good balance between diet, fiber bars and Imodium will most likely be key to successful work days (minimize bag emptying, reduce stinging from liquid output and keeping air bubbles aka unwanted stoma noises to a minimum) 👌🏻
.
I am for sure tired now and when I got home I felt a little spacey so I made sure to get one of my hydration drinks going. Other than that though, I’d say it was a pretty successful day 🔆

Went for a little hike/wander through a National Park on the weekend. Had to use the public toilets there to empty my bag.

Generally Australian toilets near the bush (forest) means look out for spiders on the toilet seat/bowl/toilet paper holder/anywhere 😆🕷 So I emptied my bag standing up - easy! Definite perk of having an Ostomy 🙌

I love that I can message my surgeon's nurse to ask questions. She always helps eliminate my fears.

1) This picture make me uncomfortable too.
2) Looking at the real thing makes me even more uncomfortable...still. 
3) There are no nerve endings in a stoma. That means the actual stoma doesn't hurt, but you better believe the surrounding skin hurts! 
4) The stoma looks like and feels like the gums inside of your mouth! 
5) All output out of this is a surprise. No idea when it's coming or what's coming. You can guarantee the moment you start eating, it will start working. 
6) Currently Instagraming to put off a bag change. 
7)This little buddy freaks me out to no end but has given me an abundance of life. I'm thankful and now I'm a productive human again! It's crazy what you can accomplish when you feel GOOD! .

Made an oil blend in a rollerball to try and heal some scars. I did two drops of lavender, frankincense, lemon, tea tree, and one drop of eucalyptus with coconut oil as my carrier oil. 🌿

When I woke up this morning I noticed my wafer was about to spring a leak. Thankfully it was bag change day. 💩

A couple of days ago I posted about some irritation/leakage I was having under my stoma. I took my bag off hoping it would look better, but it looks like things have gotten worse. 👎🏼

I usually have high liquid output in the mornings, so being able to get a good crust around my stoma proved to be quite a challenge. It ended up taking me about 40 minutes to get everything under control. 🤦🏽‍♀️

I did the crusting method and applied some Stomahesive paste to my wafer in hopes that would help protect that raw skin a little more. Fingers crossed for some healed skin when I change my bag on Tuesday! 🤞🏼

As most of you battling IBD or any chronic illness know, signing up for road trips and adventures is likely one of the last things you want to do☝🏻

While having my colon removed was one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make, I would have never been able to capture this moment if I didn’t make that decision▪️
.
After officially parting ways with my colon, I felt like I had my life back. I jumped in that car with a huge smile on my face and without a care in the world (ok, maybe I was wondering how I would go about emptying my bag in the middle of the night IN the middle of the woods 😳🐻)
.
Nonetheless colon-free me was in the adirondacks, with three of my favorite people, camping by a lake, hiking 10 miles and basking in the fall foliage 🙌🏻

To those of you interested, I wanted to share what the sutures looked like around my stoma - especially because I had a little issue with one of them. I noticed each time that I changed my bag, I had a little break in my skin around one of the sutures. I am pretty sure it was when I was a lot more bloated and there was increased pressure on the incision site. It could also be due to coughing, laughing or even too much walking early on. The suture just seem to pop up through my skin 🤷🏼‍♀️

As you can imagine, it was painful and as you can tell by where it’s located, it was especially painful when I had to push down a new wafer on that area 👎🏻
.
I reached out first to my surgeon’s nurse via email and sent her a picture as well just to make sure it would heal on its own. She confirmed it should over time but to keep my visiting nurse group’s info on hand (that I used after my first surgery) in case it got worse 🚫
.
Thankfully I haven’t had to call on their services yet but I am certainly keeping a close eye on it. In the meantime, I’ve been applying a little neosporin to the area, stoma powder and then a little extra paste to make sure it’s protected from my output. My last bag change it seemed to look better so I’m keeping my fingers crossed it will resolve itself! 🤞🏻

Side note: eventually the sutures will all dissolve and there will no longer be those threads sticking out 👍🏻

In the meantime, I’ve been applying a little neosporin to the area, stoma powder and then a little extra paste to make sure it’s protected from my output. My last bag change it seemed to look better so I’m keeping my fingers crossed it will resolve itself! 🤞🏻 . Side note: eventually the sutures will all dissolve and there will no longer be those threads sticking out 👍🏻

I so just wanted to go home after work and my hair appt today, I had to talk myself into it. So just like my clients I can lose motivation too, but I put the old guilt trip on myself and that always works. For me it's reminding myself of all the times I physically couldn't do it because of my Crohns, so I'm fortunate and blessed to do it. With that said 6x140x3, low bar paused squats.

There are so many options! Mederma, Bio-Oil, Palmers, essential oils. Help!!! •

I’m not self conscious of them because those four little scars tell the story of me getting my life back! With that said, I would like to make them a little less noticeable if possible. •

It’s felt like Monday everyday this week, I swear! •
On Sunday evening when I was changing my bag I noticed that underneath my stoma there was a small area where liquid output was piling up. I thought it was leaking down from my opening, but I saw it actively seeping from this little raw area under my stoma. I was a little alarmed because I have an end ileostomy, so I know that output is only supposed to come from one opening. I was a little concerned, but crusted the area really well and put a new appliance on.

First thing Monday morning I called my ostomy nurse at Mayo to explain the situation. She suggested going to a local wound care clinic since we live six hours from Mayo. I literally called every single would care clinic in my town (and a few surrounding towns) and none of them would see my because I didn’t have my surgery there. How frustrating. I finally got in touch with one nurse who could see me if my surgeon sent over a referral. Fast forward to today and 35 (yes, I counted) phone calls later, the referral was finally sent and I was told I couldn’t see the ostomy nurse until November 30. That isn’t going to do me much good since I’ll be at Mayo on December 4 for my pre-op appointments for step 2. • 
I finally spoke with my ostomy nurse at Mayo and after looking at the pictures I sent over to her, and she my surgeons PA feel that I will be ok until I get to Mayo in December. They said if I start to feel bad of thick output comes out of that area to head to the ER right away. • 
They think this may be a mucocutaneous separation or a very small fistula. Either way I’m praying it doesn’t get worse and will heal itself up soon. • 
I’m attaching some pictures of what’s going on. Has anyone else experienced anything similar to this? •

I received my first blue one of these at Cleveland Clinic and was overjoyed when I could roll out of the hospital with it (who doesn’t love free stuff especially when your entire body hurts?) At that point I thought it was just a Cleveland Clinic thing but when I spotted this red one at the University Hospital I was like 🙌🏻

They have nice convenient oz and ml measurements on the side that come in handy when I’m mixing up my hydration drinks 💦

Reflections: food & walking •••
When I was flaring with UC, if I ate or drank *anything* apart from water, I would generally need the bathroom within the next 30 mins. If I ate at a cafe or restaurant or bar, I’d spot the bathrooms as soon as I entered. Any walks or drives in the car, I would be mentally counting minutes, working out logistics on how to get to the nearest bathroom or breathing through stomach cramps.

It’s fair to say most of my attention was on how I felt, when UC would strike next. It’s like walking around without being able to trust your own body. For those that didn’t have IBD I would compare it to having extreme food poisoning, but you never get better.

I took myself for a walk on the weekend, after a huge lunch because I felt bloated. I had completely forgotten there is no way I would have been able to do that before. Hubby reminded me it was a pretty amazing thing that I can now do. #gratitude 🙌

It’s impressive how quickly we can let go of years of pain and suffering, and embrace the now. My “new normal” maybe not be normal compared to most people, but it’s certainly better than my previous life.

I’m pretty good at giving myself grace in life, knowing that I do my best and where I fall short is okay. I am less generous with my body. When it can’t perform the way I want it to, I get frustrated. I have to remind myself of all that my body has been through. With all of the limitations I have had, I have to acknowledge that my body has been kind of a badass in its ability to roll with life and keep up with all of the expectations I put on it. All of this time, my body has been trying to keep up with this invisible handicap. If I was walking round carrying a boulder that we all could see, it would make sense when I couldn’t keep up. But because the illness is invisible, my expectations go up. All this time, my boulder was hidden. Heavy but always there. And my body still did what I asked of it. And then, I put it through surgery after surgery, and it kept bouncing back. Each bounce back has been slower, more hesitant, but it’s still happening. I’m still bouncing back. 
When I sat on my mat today, this is what I thought about before I began my practice. I said a silent thank you to my body, and remembered that this is what every yoga practice should be. It shouldn’t be a performance, and I shouldn’t set expectations for what I will or won’t do. It is a communion of gratitude—mind, body, and spirit.

They both tell a lot of stories. I know I'm sick now, but the first photo? I was extremely happy in that photo and I can see I'm in pain. I see how tired I am. And I was. Five months after that photo, my body started to shut down. I faced a rough week to get healthy enough for surgery. My most dreaded surgery. My Ostomy surgery, plus another resection in my intestines. 
Now, it may be partially thanks to prednisone, but I'm the second highest weight I've been. Its bothersome, but it means I'm not 105 pounds like the last picture. 
I'm still sick. I always will be. My illness is chronic. It has no cure. These surgeries, all five of them, are not a cure. They just relief the symptoms that become toxic and life threatening. 
I may hate how my overweight body look now, but then I find a picture of how I used to look before my Ostomy and I'm shocked.

As a 29 year old who has not had any children yet, this was on the top of my list of questions for my surgeon before having my entire colon removed. Here is what she shared based on their research (keep in mind, this is for those who have had laparoscopic surgeries - also, I specifically had UC prior to surgery and have no known inflammation in my small intestine):
.
▪️You can start trying for kids just 6 WEEKS after your last surgery (my husband and I were like 🙌🏻)
▪️1 out of 4 women may have trouble getting pregnant NATURALLY due to scar tissue around the fallopian tubes
▪️If you are that 1 woman, IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) can be a very successful alternative
▪️If you do have to go the IVF route, you should be able to get insurance approval after 6 months of actively trying due to your medical history (a healthy couple normally has to try for at least a year before getting approval)
▪️Your ability thereafter to have a normal pregnancy should not be impacted (assuming no unexpected complications from surgery)
▪️Natural birth & C-sections are both options although my surgeon recommended a C-section for someone who has not yet had a child due to the potential stress/injury in that general area. For those who have already had kids, it is less of an issue
▪️There should be no impact to the overall health of your baby!

I️ am so incredibly proud of this guy for always gutting it out and giving it his all.  Even though @dkwhite26 has been super busy the last couple months and didn’t have much time to train, he still went out there and managed to complete some crazy miles. Anyone who can do 55.5 miles on minimal training is a badass.  Even though he didn’t achieve his goal this time, I️ know he won’t give up and will continue to give it his all next time around.  He is a natural ultra runner and I️ could only hope to be as talented as him.  Keys 100 we’re coming for you!

A bit obsessed with my new kicks ☝🏻👟 . These new balances have been a god send when it comes to recovering and my joint pain. Officially starting to transition back to work today 💻📈

Being in the accounting/finance world has some perks in that I am able to easily work from the comfort of my home. Being able to work remotely definitely aids in getting back to work sooner. I will be working half days from home this week just so that I can start getting back up to speed with emails and with everything that happened while I was out ✔️

My team has been so supportive and have made sure I am taking the time I need. I told my boss I think I need to start getting my brain back into the swing of things and half days from home seem to be a good way to do that 💡

Headed home today to recover! Thank you Dr. Wexner for fixing me right up! I'm in a bit of discomfort, but my pouch has already started functioning and so far so good 🙌🏻🙌🏻 so very thankful for these amazing caregivers and surgeons they truly changed my life and took away the disease that controlled my life. Went to my lovely friends wedding on friday. It was so beautiful: perfect weather, lovely ceremony and gorgeous couple.

It’s so bizarre not to have to request any dietary restrictions now. As long as I chew thoroughly, my stoma is happy with all these new foods. Super grateful for that, of course. Especially as there was an epic cheese station behind our table at the reception - YUM.

While unfortunately it is due to a family loss, it does feel nice to get out of the house and be with the ones I love most. After lots of tears, I have to tell myself to smile and think only of the fond memories 💛

Sickness has taught me that life is too short to be anything other than exactly who you are. Be brave. Don’t wait until things are the way you think they should be to do what you want to do. When I told my surgeon on my first visit that I was a yoga teacher and had just finished my 200 hr training, he was surprised that this was something I accomplished while I was sick. I told him that when you are sick most of your life, you don’t wait around until you are well to do what you want to do. .

Love your life exactly the way you are. Love your body exactly the way it is. Do what you love with scars, fat rolls, grey hair, stiff joints, a bad memory, a broken heart, whatever ails you. Mortality is the real deal and life is too short to waste your energy on the wrong things. .

If I had waited until I was well to start practicing yoga, it wouldn’t have happened. If I thought that yogis could only look one way, I wouldn’t have bothered trying. If I thought yogis had to eat a certain diet, I couldn’t have started this. Yoga, and life, don’t require us to fit in a mold. Life is much more beautiful and interesting if you are brave enough to step outside of the molds and see the mosaic created by a life lived courageously. .

I've bought a couple of bag covers from an Etsy shop! They fit and stay on great while preventing people from seeing an unwanted surprise! 🙅🏻☠️
I've been feeling really good! I do notice that the more physically active I am the more sore I am the following day. I still can't wear tight pants or leggings all day, or I pay for that too the next day. I am shocked by how tender my abdomen is. Places far from the incision sites hurt. 🤷🏻‍♀️but other than that things are so good! I sleep well and have way more energy than I have had in the last several years!

With some of the skin irritation I’ve been having, I decided to try to find little ways to give it a break ✂️✔️

During my last bag change, I cut the side of the wafer to let one of the small blisters that had developed breathe. I’ve since been applying a little ointment to the spot and it’s already starting to heal up 👌🏻

I’ve included a close up picture as well so you can see how I cut the wafer. If you are pretty trusting in your bag and don’t have issues with leaks, this may be a helpful trick if you come across a little irritation ⚠️

I was hoping that after having the disease removed from my body that I would get some relief from the joint discomfort. It seems to only be in my knees but sometimes they really feel achy 👎🏻

Surgery is not a decision that is come by easily. It's scary and full of "what ifs". What was your journey to surgery like, what made you say "yes" to surgery? .

Mine: I became ill early in college, I didn't know what was going on. I was passing a lot of blood. I was in an unfamiliar town and went to a clinic that came as a recommendation. I saw just about the worst doctor ever. He said I was too young to have UC, Crohns, or have a colonoscopy. 😡😡😡😡He decided I was eating too much ketchup/tomatoes. 🙄🙄🙄Me being terrified I just rolled with it for another year for me to get so much worse.  I was finally diagnosed with UC and started with oral meds. Then some steroids here and there, then more oral meds, then a hellish year of fighting c-diff ( hospitals, doctors, fecal transplants, feeling like death, losing 50lbs in 5 months, dropping out of college), seeing doctors in Dallas that said I didn't actually have c-diff and was treating the wrong thing 😑😑, humera injections, simponi injections, and entyvio infusions. All to result in very minimal improvements and still having full blown UC. 20 plus bathroom breaks a day, severe pain, severe anxiety, and severely controlling my life. .

I was on schedule and enrolled to start a masters program August 2017. My doctor said it was unrealistic and pushed me to surgery. One #jakediekman and #gutitout video later (major inspiration), here I am colon-less and loving life. Wishing I had done this 4 years ago!
