Okay let's talk about .hack Vol.1 Infection. The first part of the tetralogy, there is a prequel anime to this game, that could add more to the world and its setting, but ultimately not necessary to play the games. In .hack you play a game within a game, as you take the role of the protagonist's avatar in an MMO called The World. Our protagonist (Kite) was invited by his friend Orca to play The World, while Orca was showing Kite how the game is played, they stumble on a dungeon, where they see a ghost of girl being chased by monster, the ghost tried to give Orca a book of Twilight, but he ends up getting attacked by the monster, this attack made the game servers crash, soon after, our protagonist learn that his friend went comatose after the attack, thus his journey begin to explore and seek answers on how to help his freind. Now whatever im going to say about this game can be applied to the other 3 games, since they basically try nothing new (basically all 4 games play out the same). Now the story in .hack is well written, but told in a very poor away, for starters the pace is awful, it takes ages for something to happen, this game will take you between 15-20 hours to finish (story), and aside from the last hour nothing really happens, this is mainly to accommodate the game being 4 parts, game should have been 2 parts a max, but oh well that's beside the point now, they filled the gap in the middle with the some interesting stuff, for starters as you're a player in an mmo, you can log out of the game, to check your emails, forums and news, and trust this is a must for main story and side stuff, but the best part about all this, is that they used these ideas to expand on the lore and background stuff, if you're into these then oh boy you love it. Now while filling the gap you will be going back and forth between aresa in the game, farming, leveling and exploring. So how is the gameplay ? Im not sure how I feel about it, it honestly feel like you're playing an MMO, but the one thing you must take note of, is that you should never treat as an action rpg, do that and you will be seeing the gameover screen a lot xD,
