The origin of the common name "foxglove" is unclear, but the original name may have been “folk’s gloves”, with “folk” referring to fairy folk. Fairies-petticoats, fairy-caps and fairies-dresses are among the many common names. "If you see a foxglove bending over, it is because the fairies are hiding in the bells." A story also goes that if you picked a foxglove you would offend the fairy folk.
Other sources say that it comes from the Old English foxes glofa meaning “foxes’ glove”, the myth being that foxes wore magical gloves to sneak in to raid the chicken coop. Cunning, shrewd little foxes using the bells of the foxglove as gloves to soften and quiet their attacks.
Although foxglove is very dangerous if misused, it has a long history of medicinal use for heart and kidney problems, edema and aconite poisoning. Legend says that Van Gogh used it to treat his epilepsy.
An old saying about foxglove goes "It can raise the dead and it can kill the living".
In Roman mythology, Flora showed Hera or Juno how to impregnate herself with no need of a man by touching a foxglove to her belly and her breasts. She either gave birth to Mars or Vulcan from this method, depending on the source.
Scandinavian legend says that the faeries taught foxes to ring foxglove bells to warn each other of approaching hunters.
Foxgloves have a long association with witches and witchcraft. They are associated with pride, magic, energy, intuition, ambition, creativity, confidence, productivity, cooperation and communication.
