While we were painting and repainting our old baseboards, some of them were damaged so we decided now is the time to go ahead and change out ALL of our baseboards to a more modern and simple style. What started out as a kitchen/dining room/living room/ hallway flooring project has evolved into a "let's put the same flooring in every room except the bathrooms, repaint all the walls, change out all the baseboards, redo the coat closet shelving, switch out a light fixture, and more! Beginning to this think is the project that NEVER ends... it goes on and on our friends...
🔨 When we put down new flooring, we didn't think about it not being as thick as our carpet. This means if we put our baseboards back down, we would have a strip at the bottom of all our walls that wouldn't be fully painted.
🖌 Soo... today we begin the repainting process because touch up paint always sticks out like a sore thumb. We believe if it's worth doing, it's worth doing right. Even if it takes a zillion times longer than originally planned.
🏠 Thankfully we have leftover paint from when we first bought our house) (and yes, it's still good!!) and since we still LOVE the color, it won't be any major change.
🧥 We planned on starting in on the small coat closet first and ended up deciding to totally redo the closet while we are at it. Because you can never have too much well thought out and usable places to store stuff! Closets are rooms too y'all!
🔨The flooring installation process really makes me apprecaite my elementary and middle school math classes! Here is some #MathInTheRealWorld for ya...
WE USED MATH TO FIGURE OUT:
🏠Square footage of each room
💲Compare prices of our favorite flooring samples and the coverage in each box
🔣Percentage of how much extra to buy
⚖️Weight of 50+ boxes of flooring vs. how much weight we can put in the back of our truck
📏Exact measurements to cut the starting and ending pieces of each row
📐Angles for the corners, door ways, and other odd cuts
📊Graph paper (with help of our handy dandy iPad) to determine the best non-repeating layout
🔢Sorting 12 versions of over 400 boards into stacks
⏳And of course calculating how close we are to being done!
After installing almost half a room of new flooring, we developed a posty note numbering system to help the same patterned boards not be too close to each other! It would have been much easier to do this at the beginning... so... if you are laying flooring anytime in the near future, use this trick to help save you some thinking, board searching, and project time!
We're moving....1700 pounds of flooring from a local gas station to our house! 🏠 Why? Good question! 📦Because apparently "Ship to Home" means "Our 40ft delivery truck is not allowed on private property and probably can't turn around in your driveway so you will have to meet us somewhere to pick it up" 🚚 ⚖️It's not like we haul 1700 pounds of stuff around every day and our truck would be sagging to the ground with that much weight. Flooring is HEAVY y'all! (We just unloaded all 56 boxes from the pallets) so we ended up renting a U-Haul to haul it all of three miles to our house. 👩🏻💻So... Please do us a favor and learn from our lesson: A "Ship to Home" button on a website can be misleading! No warning of this anywhere. Pinky promise, we checked! 🔨 Oh yeah... Our lovely laminate flooring has made it to our house and we will start installing it next weekend! Too. Excited!!!! Just. Can't. Wait!
🏠Our house WAS clean this morning... until we started pulling up our flooring. 🔨 Of all of our zillion projects we have done to our home over the past six years, this flooring project may be the most drastic change of them all!✨ It is one project we have saved and planned for and can't wait to enjoy the "after" when it's all done hopefully by the end of September! Stay tuned for progress pics throughout the month!
