When you have no power whatsoever over your own life, wouldn't you rather just become a tree? You could stretch your legs high up into the air while your arms extend all the way down to the earth's very core, and the water that is saturating the soil would be drawn up through your cells, eventually to bloom from your crotch like flowers.
If anyone else wants to read a Korean novel filled with blood, rape, and vomit, PM me your address and I'll send it to you. Also, I've finished The Handmaid's Tale and would happily pass that on as well. Both books are well worth reading.
Kisah seorang vegan yang ingin bertransformasi menjadi pohon. Terdapat tiga bagian.
Look, sister, I’m doing a handstand; leaves are growing out of my body, roots are sprouting out of my hands. They delve down into the earth. Endlessly, endlessly. Yes, I spread my legs because I wanted flowers to bloom from my crotch; I spread them wide.

Tak salah jika The New York Times menempatkannya sebagai salah satu, dari 10 buku terbaik tahun 2016.

Finished 1984 and rather not discuss it given the world news of late and my MH state at the moment. However, I would like to discuss The Vegetarian. I think I might pick that one up again. Yes, it's dark too but writen in such a way that I can't seem to stop once I've started reading. •
Are you or did you read this book? If so, what are your thoughts on it?
Enjoy your Sunday eve!
I was so excited to read this much talked about book, and was highly disappointed 🤦🏼♀️ It's the first South Korean author I've read, and I really enjoyed the style of writing. I found the plot absolutely disturbing, strange and a little far fetched. I know, I know, it's a representation of something greater but I struggled to get to the end with all the meat and gore! This book is about anything but being a vegetarian! 😂 #bookworm#bookworld#bookish#bookstagram#bookstagrammer#instabook#thevegeterian#hankang
As fate would have it I happened on another book on power. I kid you not I went in blind and found myself utterly immersed, only to emerge on other side so emotionally exhausted. Although, I should have known judging from the obscure & eerie cover (Duhhhh!!)
Human Acts narrates the tragedy of South Korea's (not so known) Gwangju uprising not as a didactic historical account but as a cautionary tale on political & social upheavals through the stories of 6 people including the author.
It's POV approach is clear & concise & manages to give us enough to understand the phlight of each character. Half way through the book you realise that there is a tonal shift & the final chapter masterfully wraps all the elements together with an autobiographical account from Han Kang herself during & after the Gwangju uprising. I was stunned at how detailed the autobiographical account was & it goes without saying that this violated my expectations of genre classification. I'm still outchea pondering this issue 🤔.
It manages to capture for us what South Korean society is like by glorifying breastfeeding (YAY!) & giving a detailed account of customs which are essential to a South Koreans. I welcomed this as a break from all the visceral images of corpses and lost souls. Dead bodies & massacre's are what open up this novel which is (upon reflection) a clever way to draw the reader in.
Anyway, I highly recommend it because it's masterfully written and captivating. As for me I will be staying away from gory books until my soul has had time to recover. ▪️▪️▪️
It's a 5 ⭐️. It asks a lot of questions which I remember pondering about when I read up on Apartheid. I'll leave you with one such quote:
"Is it true that human beings are fundamentally cruel? Is the experience of cruelty the only thing we share as a species? Is the dignity that we cling to nothing but self-delusion, masking from ourselves the single truth: that each one of us is capable of being reduced to an insect, a ravening beast, a lump of meat? To be degraded, slaughtered - is this the essential of humankind, one which history has confirmed as inevitable?" #book49 of 💯
Yeong-hye turned her head and stared blankly at In-hye, as though the latter were not sister but a complete stranger. After a while, the question came. "Why, is it such a bad thing to die?"
Just finished this novel couple days ago. Well, I'm having hard times to find the proper word to describe this novel. It's just "woah". At first pages I was like "okay..interesting" and then the next following pages got me like "the heck! What was that?!! Damn you Han Kang!" Boom..the plot turn upside-down. The second part, Mongolian Mark was my favorite part. It was jaw-dropping and mind-blowing. No wonder she beats Eka and be the winner of The Man Booker International Prize last year. And now I'm dying to read Human Acts...but am broke af. Thank you. For asking. I love you. Muah.
