Standing at the top of the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge in Omaha a few weeks ago, I was mesmerized by the chunks of ice floating down the river. It was freezing and windy but I found myself in complete awe and stillness as the ice swiftly moved below my feet.
I was reminded of the yogic idea of Ishvara Pranidhana or the idea of surrender. In this moment, I was still like when I'm laying on my back in savasana at the end of class. I didn't allow myself to think about a million different things happening in my life, but rather surrendered to the moment before me and just let go.
All of these moments where yoga presents itself in my life feel like confirmation that I am on the right path. I don't need to overthink my every decision or thought, but rather surrender to the journey.
This cold and snowy morning in West Michigan has me wishing for a cup of hot coffee, a warm blanket, and a good book. At least I can do 2 of the 3 and after work, will opt for some time to read.
A new year always brings about a lot of contemplation and add in the journey of yoga teacher training, and I’m trying to navigate my way around where I am in my life, what I want, where I’m headed, and how to best go about that path. It can be so easy to get down on myself for being 30 and not having all of the answers but at the same time, life is a journey and we aren’t meant to figure everything out at once.
If you find yourself contemplating where you are and what you’re doing, if you find the call of warm blankets and good books greater than the motivation of your job, I hope you find the courage to do the internal work and discovery to figure out what will better fill your soul, and then I hope you have the courage to take those steps, even when they seem so scary.
Good morning, 2018! So stoked to be kicking off the new year with a fresh take on food - NO calorie counting, NO obsessing over "banned" foods, NO guilt. "Eat food, not too much, mostly plants" (right, @flowerpollan ?) The new #HGGReset does just that, with a four week meal plan designed to deliver plant-forward, digestion-friendly, nutrient-dense foods that still feel like an indulgence. I'm digging in with "Eggs in a Frame", and already, it might be one of my new favorite breakfasts. 👌🏻 -------------------------------
If you're feeling a little bloated and blah in the aftermath of the holiday season, and you want to take advantage of the clean slate that comes with a new year, check out the link in my profile, and use the code RESET10 for $10 off between now and Sunday!
Can you believe that 2018 is only a day away?! A New Year often brings big changes and new resolutions/intentions. This is a great opportunity to pickup a new hobby, try a new workout routine, and even implement a new approach to food and quitting unhealthy habits. For my part, I’m really pumped to be starting on the #HGGreset . My ladies over at the @healthyglow.co are launching a reset plan tomorrow, January 1st and I couldn’t be more excited! It’s a 4-week focus (featuring 60+ brand new, exclusive & delicious recipes) on nourishing your body with foods that work in your favour, while stripping back what weighs you down. What I love about the program is that you won’t find any “YES/NO” lists. They want to encourage you to fill your plate with an abundance of foods that will help you go from feeling good to feeling fab, and they’ve intentionally designed this program to help you 1) eat more plants 2) promote digestion and 3) prepare easy, flavorful meals with step-by-step meal prep guidance. I had the privilege of glancing over the new guide and I can’t wait to get started! Healthy eating begins at home, and that food is the foundation for how you feel. Start the new year by establishing a new, sustainable eating pattern with healthy, satisfying food that tastes as good as it makes you feel! HGG Reset will lay the foundation for you with healthy eating principles that can last a lifetime. It’s the perfect way to kickstart the new year and well beyond! 💪🏻💚
Raise your hand if you’re already thinking about how you’re going to reset your body and diet once the holidays are over. Yup, me too! 🙋🏻 If, like me, you always start the new year with the best intentions and a “refresh” attitude but come the second week you’re done and ready to call it quits, well I’ve got some great help to push us through! My girls @ambitiouskitchen and @fitfoodiefinds from the @healthyglow.co are coming to the rescue with a free LIVE webinar on Sunday January 7th at 8pm CST, to share their personal journeys to healing their relationships with food and exercise as well as strategies they use to “reset” during busy seasons and more. This is one amazing event you don’t wanna miss, and there’s even a surprise at the end for viewers! I stay pretty healthy throughout the year, but not gonna lie, I’ve definitely fallen off the wagon in the last few months and am so ready for an #HGGreset with these awesome and inspirational ladies! Join me and my @healthyglow.co fam by clicking the link in my profile! #HGCambassador
Have I been slacking on social media lately? For sure. Am I okay with it? Absolutely!! Life is about more than posting to IG, FB or even my blog, especially during the holidays. While I love how these platforms have connected me to some amazing people who have turned into lifelong friends, it’s nice sometimes to take a step back, rest, reflect, and not feel like you’re living a life glued to your phone.
Life has been so full lately. Full of people, experiences, places, and things that have made my heart so full and grateful. I happily step aside when it means more of those moments. I wish for your holiday weekend to be full of those moments and if you don’t hear from me for the next few days: Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays! 🎄
Is anyone else already thinking about how they want to tweak their diet post-holidays? 🙋🏼I always start a "refresh" with so many ideas, but after the first week, I get a little stuck. Fortunately, help is on the way! On SUNDAY, JANUARY 7th, at 8pm CST, @ambitiouskitchen and @fitfoodiefinds will be going LIVE to talk about health and sustainability - and if their stories and tips were not enough, their webinar includes a surprise for viewers! I'm looking forward to an #hgcreset with these ladies! Join in with the link in my profile!
There is so much yoga in my life right now and I'm not sure I could ever find the words to describe all the ways in which it is completely enriching and changing my life. I am so grateful for this practice and the community it has brought into my world.
Start your day on the right foot. Start your day with something that will clear your mind and help you get closer to achieving your goals for the day. That may be different for everyone, but for me that often means a good workout, yoga, or even just an easy walk. It's those moments of silence before the rest of the world wakes up that I really love.
Raise your hand 🙋🏼 if you also struggle with not eating ALL the dates when you make energy balls! These lemon chia seed truffles (and I swear, they taste JUST like a lemon poppyseed muffin!) will be coming out in a TOP SECRET @healthyglow.co project VERY SOON! Keep your eyes peeled for deets!
Did you catch my top tips to prepare for winter running? It's COLD in GR today and with the snow that came the last couple days, you know winter has officially arrived! #linkinprofile#ontheblog#ad#waverider21

DIET VS. LIFESTYLE: I don't know about you, but when I hear "diet", my first reaction is ". . .ugh." A diet sounds like restriction, limitation, and desperation, made in the short term in order to get some quick results that probably don't last. "Lifestyle" on the other hand, sounds comfortable, effortless, and positive. A lifestyle is something that you can maintain, long term. You know what's part of my lifestyle?
1️⃣ Three regular meals, a snack, and a dessert, every day.
2️⃣ ~1600 cal/day, which provides sufficient fuel to allow me to shave MINUTES off my run time (got in my first 8:50 mile this week; last year I was running 10:30), and have focus to totally slay those strength workouts.
3️⃣ Wine on the weekends (important because wine is important, but also because I live right above the foxiest little lounge in my city).
4️⃣ Globally inspired recipes with spice combinations that are interesting and keep me from ever being bored. Peruvian chicken? ☑️ Indian curries? ☑️
5️⃣ The ability to modify those recipes to gluten free, dairy free, paleo, or vegan. My brothers are celiacs, so this means I can cook for the whole family.
6️⃣ Strength training, so that I have more lean muscle mass, which means my metabolism works more efficiently, and my runs feel easier.
☝🏻This lifestyle has not come easily to me. I was on a "diet" for a solid 18 months before I found my lifestyle. It sucked. 1200 cal/day, endless hours in the gym, serious fatigue, and so. Many. Cravings. I lost the weight, but it really wasn't worth it.
✂️ Then, I found @ambitiouskitchen and @fitfoodiefinds on Insta. Both promoted a food lifestyle that sounded a lot more healthy, balanced, and enjoyable than the 💩 I'd been putting myself through. A couple weeks after my initial discovery, I realized that they shared a meal plan, in the form of @healthyglow.co . When I say that this meal plan saved my sanity and my metabolism, I mean it. 🙌🏻 Now I have a lifestyle, not a diet, and it makes all the difference in the world.
If you have been wanting to try that HGC lifestyle, now is the time! Tap the link in my profile and use the code HGCCYBERMONDAY for 30% off!
Weekends are the best, aren't they? Coffee with the boy, grocery shopping, writing, studying for YTT, delicious food, moving my body, cleaning, and just time to relax. I have no complaints for what my day has in store.
Hey there! 👋 I haven't introduced myself in a while (or ever?!), so I thought I'd do that today!
1️⃣ When people ask me where I'm from, the shortest answer I can give is "everywhere". I grew up in California and Alaska, attended college in South Dakota, worked in the Four Corners, and now I commute between Washington and BC! 🇨🇦
2️⃣ I can't stand bananas. 🙊
3️⃣ I'm a dog person, all the way. We lost my Pom a year ago, but I get my fix by doting on my wife's Greater Swiss Mountain Dog (@homobragger )
4️⃣ That wife of mine is an emergency vet (AKA a superhero). Her work schedule is absolute chaos, so often we spend time "together" at the hospital. I love watching the inner workings of the clinic - vets and techs are some of the most dedicated humans out there.
5️⃣ Fall is my favorite 🍁
6️⃣ I love Israeli food!
7️⃣ My fitness goal for 2018 is to run 18 distance races. I have already signed up for most of them.
8️⃣ @kayla_itsines got me on to Insta, and was the motivation for this account, but @healthyglow.co saved my food sanity (and metabolism!)
9️⃣ I still struggle with my body image.
🔟 Flat whites are my coffee weakness!
Share something about yourself! ❤
For the last couple of weeks, all I have wanted are carbs...bread, cereal, anything but my usual healthy and nutritious meals. I went with it, filling in the gaps with veggie soups, but I know I'm starting to turn the corner now that I find myself craving my usual favorites like my morning smoothie packed with fruits and veggies! Yum!
I may not really feel like it right now, but with each day I am making progress and feeling a little better. I am reminding myself that progress is progress and sooner rather than later, I will be back to my healthy, glowing, and active self. ✨
dat fall doe. 😍
Fall is absolutely my favorite season so I love that it has finally really started to look and feel like it. I've been cooped up in my apartment by myself all weekend in an attempt to recover and get healthy again, but when there was a break in the rain yesterday, I found myself craving a little bit of fresh air and easy movement. Since I was feeling up for it, I went for it and it sure did feel good. Here's to hoping I'm on the mend and can get back to my normal activity level soon.
@fit_pham made this graphic JUST IN TIME to help me with my #mealprepmonday this week! I'd been planning on whipping up a batch of red curry coconut peanut butter chicken (try saying that five times fast), and I had been debating just putting it on forbidden rice, veggies, or a mix. 🤔 Realistically, skipping some rice would likely cause me to overindulge on other carbs, and it's reassuring to know that the carbs I want are actually sometimes a better choice (when used in moderation, and mixed with veggies) than a substitute.
What a fun surprise! I came home from a long day yesterday to see a surprise box sitting outside my door from @healthyglow.co! Thank you ladies for this fun treat. I can't wait to dive into the new STRONG program!! #healthyglowco#HGCstrong#hgccommunity
Nothing better on a Monday than a solid sweat, and a multicolor plate. The #healthyglowguide Coconut Curry Chicken is a top pick in our house, even for my coconut-wary wife. Best of all, it tastes even better next day!
I popped out for my run after work last night, and only made it a quarter mile out before my body shut me down. In tears, I walked another two miles, and resolved to try again the next day.
This morning, I ran 4 miles, and on a negative split. I used to run to "make up for" unhealthy choices, but now I do it because I CAN run, and I like it. Even on days that I'm slow, running feels good. Even when I go fast but not far, it makes me feel alive. And isn't that the quote? "Do what makes you come alive"?

So many food photos on Insta are heavily glamorized, with perfectly styled edibles lounging in front of the dreamiest backdrop. I don't think there's anything wrong with that, but that's just not what food IS absolutely all the time. Food is humble. Food is fuel. Food nourishes us, gives us energy, heals the wrongs we sometimes commit against our bodies. And most of the time, this is what good looks like, as it is eaten over a lunch break.
#whatsonmyplate this afternoon is from the Fall/Winter #healthyglowguide : Butternut Chickpea Lentil Stew (perfect for #meatlessmonday !). Chickpeas and lentils are full of fiber and plant based protein, and butternut squash is high in both vitamins A and C, as well as B6 (and more fiber). I'm kick starting my fall fitness with a reboot of the Glow Guide, as well, because this is the food that (no matter how poorly styled) makes me feel my best. If you're considering the Glow Guide and #hgcstrong , the code BUY2STRONG gets you 20% off until the end of the day today.
Who's ready for the @healthyglowco STRONG 6-week workout program? There's a 3 and 5-day per week calendar to customize your workout experience targeting your upper body, lower body, cardio + core to build strength and endurance and bust through fitness plateaus. ⠀

Jumping for joy because #hgcstrong is HERE! As an #hgcambassador , I have always been proud of the Glow Guides, the workouts (SUP Power Yoga and Planks is my OG favorite!), and the community. However, after my running injury last year, I realized how important it is to cross train, and that strength is essential even to cardio bunnies like me. I loved the #hgcbootcamp , and if you enjoyed that, too, HGC Strong is for you. BONUS: this program includes pre- and post-workout snack recipes! ------------------------------------------------
Want to give Strong a try? If you buy two items in the HGC shop (found through the link in my profile) today or tomorrow (24th or 25th), the code BUY2STRONG will get you a $20 discount! Feel free to PM me with questions!

As a @healthyglow.co ambassador, I tend to pay pretty close attention to what @ambitiouskitchen and @fitfoodiefinds are up to, and early on, I noticed a decent amount of enthusiastic kombucha consumption. Kombucha is not new to the health world, nor is it new to me, but the first (and last) batch I had was a homebrew from a friend's basement. . .and I have avoided kombucha ever since. That being said, I firmly believe in challenging your own beliefs, including those about food, so I gave kombucha another try today. This @brewdrkombucha in Superberry was delicious -- I would absolutely drink it again!
