To say that Hialeah has grown in the last 50 years is an understatement, from a sleepy town west of Miami, to the 5th largest city in Florida. Progress is a wonderful thing but it often comes at a cost and unlike our sister city of Miami Springs which has done an excellent job at preserving history, Hialeah on the other hand, has not.
We have just two sites in the National Register of historic places. The newly renovated Hialeah Race Track, a glorious masterpiece and The Hialeah Railway station (pictured above). This historic station was built in 1926 in a Mediterranean revival style. It's one of the oldest standing structures in Hialeah. There is also a twin station in Naples as well. This station would operate only during the winter months bringing snow birds all the way from New York.
It's truly a remarkable building, beautiful attention to details from ironwork to moldings. Sadly it's boarded up, it sits lonely and forgotten. By contrast the twin station in Naples was turned into a museum, perhaps the current administration might be inclined to preserve such a wonderful and historic site. #hialeah 🚂
