I remember sitting around the family dinner table as a kid and my mom reading to us about the five love languages. Have any of you heard about this? The basic idea is that there are five different categories of how to show affection and that each of us excels at some and struggle with others. We also have specific languages that make us feel more loved than others. For example I am a quality time kind of person - I am good at giving quality time and when people commit time to me I feel loved. That is a love language that speaks to me. I am NOT a good gift giver and I have always struggled with receiving presents from people, it’s outside my comfort zone in a pretty big way. That means this time of the year is pretty squirmy for me (#privilege ). So what have I done? From a young age I started trying to influence the fabric of my family (immediate and extended) to sway them away from material items and towards experience based offerings. This weekend is our extended family Christmas and this year we are trying out a completely new type of experience. Stay tuned for more! Also, check out the love languages and figure out which ones you speak - even though it’s a slightly corny idea I have found it handy for helping me understand myself, my partner, my family and friends.
