In 1914, these guys knew how to dress properly for winter. You should put on some warm clothes - you can also bring your drums and trumpets - and join them for some seasonal fun. Don't forget to bring the kids!

Juli Lynne Charlot & the Circle Skirt

Juli Lynne Charlot was 25, broke, when in the winter of 1947 she was invited to a holiday party in Los Angeles. Without an outfit to wear or money for a new one, or knowledge of how to sew, she decided to create her own dress for the party.

Juli had access to a free supply of felt, so she took the material and in her words, “cut the circle out of felt, which allowed me to cut a complete circle skirt without having any seams.” She then “added some whimsical Christmas motif appliqués.” Her skirt was a hit. She received many compliments at the party.

Still in need of money, Juli decided to make two more skirts. She took them to a boutique in Beverly Hills. The owner put the skirts on the floor where they sold immediately. He then placed another order for more, and with that the fashion of circle skirts began.

1930 Reynaldo Luza illustrations for La Samaritaine de Luxe catalogue. Luza worked for Vogue and Harper's Bazaar but also designed several series of striking pochoir plates for fashion companies such as Revillon and Prouvost. In the late 1920s and early 1930s, Luza also worked for a special branch of the department store La Samaritaine: La Samaritaine de Luxe. This store created in 1917 targeted a wealthier clientele than the main store. La Samaritaine de Luxe which only dealt with luxury goods was therefore settled in a different location than La Samaritaine, in the Opera district, a more chic area of Paris. Famous architect Frantz Jourdain designed the building of the store located 27 boulevard des Capucines (which still exists today). Luza designed the cover of several catalogues of La Samaritaine de Luxe including this one dedicated to furs for Fall Winter 1930-1931. The catalogues were printed by Draeger. The cover shows an Ermine cape priced 38 000 francs. The back cover shows a Breitchwantz and silver fox coat priced 35 000 francs. The black and white plate shows an Ermine coat priced 29 000 francs. According to INSEE, the French National institution dealing with statistics, 1 francs from 1930 would equal 0,57 euros today which means the price of the ermine cape featured on the cover would have cost 21 660 euros.

Evening dresses by Paul Poiret for Winter 1919-1920. Very large pochoir plate by Huguette Haendel featured in the issue of Les Elegances du Soir for Winter 1919-1920. Les Elegances du Soir was an album dedicated to evening dresses published by fashion magazine Les Elegances Parisiennes which was a monthly fashion magazine founded by Lucien Vogel (founder of la Gazette du Bon Ton) in 1915 under the title Style Parisien. Renamed in 1916 Les Elegances Parisiennes, the periodical issued several specialized albums including Le Tailleur de Paris, La Blouse, Les Elegances du Soir, Les Chapeaux des Elegances Parisiennes. These albums are pretty rare and the illustrations featured in have almost never been reproduced. Fig 1. Robe de velours jaune d'or, corsage en gaze d'argent. Fig. 2. Fig. 3. Tissu à m'ailles d'argent, fourrure, galon d'argent." The plate not only displays the front of the dress but the back too. Huguette Haendel worked for other Lucien Vogel's publications such as L'Illustration des Modes and Le Jardin des Modes.

Evening dresses by Melnotte Simonin for Winter 1919-1920. Very large pochoir plate featured in the issue of Les Elegances du Soir for Winter 1919-1920. Y'all. If you're ready for seriously gorgeous imagery and fantastic facts, follow author and historian Caroline Rennolds Milbank @jupeculotte. Great biographies, fashion history, and vintage prints- like this aigrette. Made from platinum, and set with emerald, sapphires, diamonds, and pearls, it's on display in Gallery 464 of the @metmuseum as part of the Al-Thani Collection. ***repost*** "Imagine you were a political cartoonist-turned fashion designer/illustrator and you added to your resume designer of a small collection of jewels and this aigrette was one of your first efforts? The mind boggles. Paul Iribe, 1910, executed by Robert Linzeler. To be seen in the exhibition now in Venice: Tesori Dei Moghul E Dei Maharaja: La Collezione Al Thani, Palazzo Ducale. Worn by Iribe's about-to-be-wife actress Jeanne Dirys for her performance as Irma in the play Le Cadre de Coutras, 1911, Theatre du Vaudeville. The second image shows Paul Iribe's illustration for the cover of Comoedia Illustré featuring his wife in a navy and black dress, the aigrette pin and a hat by Chanel. Have not been able to pinpoint when Paul Iribe met Gabrielle Chanel (he famously died on her tennis court decades later) but his bride apparently wears a number of hats by Chanel in this play (4th swipe) and perhaps Iribe/Chanel connected over the coordinating of Mme. Iribe's well promoted stage wardrobe? Also interesting is her Hellenic white dress seen in the last two images. Although hard to see the dress has the straight lines and raised waistline seen in Paul Iribe's illustrations of Paul Poiret's designs in their succes fou publication of 1908 Les Robes de Paul Poiret. The crossed bands at the chest and the indication of a button closure at the side also suggest another talent just starting out, Mariano Fortuny. For further images of this aigrette brooch as worn in a play the following year see @diktats_bookstore must-read instagram. #1911fashion #teensfashion #pauliribe #gabriellechanel #parisfashion #histoiredelamode" 💥
