Loved my visit to Gardiner Museum after a very loooong absence!one of my favourite s was this mid18thc Japanese vessel. Vibrant and so contemporary with a nod to Persian ceramics??

Discussing dressing up for the museum's Night at the Museum event, and then I find this transfer print in the storeroom. Current status: giggle snorting at my own bad joke #bridesmaids #historicceramics #museum #museumeducation #archaeology #gradschool

Collections research always produces the occasional surprise. Hidden in a ceramics bag was this little sherd of polychrome delft. Notice it's rounded, shaped edges? We're thinking this guy was used as a gaming piece. Another, more obvious example of a gaming piece from earlier excavation at #heywardwashington is pictured on the right. An awesome example of artifact post-manufacture modification! #archaeology #historicalarchaeology #history #charleston #charlestonarchaeology #historicceramics #gaming #eighteenthcenturystyle

Another slipware, this time 🇺🇸! This beautiful plate at the bottom of the image is constructed with similar techniques as staffordshire, but likely made stateside. The museum refers to it as Mid-Atlantic ware, and it may have been made in the Pennsylvania region by German immigrants. #historicalarchaeology #archaeology #ceramics #historicceramics #charleston #charlestonarchaeology
A little bit of staffordshire slipware to start your day. This eighteenth century find is pretty common at Heyward-Washington. It's an English made lead glazed coarse earthenware, and while these trailed designs are fairly simple they can get quite intricate #historicceramics #ceramics #archaeology #historicalarchaeology #charleston #charlestonarchaeology #heywardwashington
To use the famous phrase from Monty Python! .."and now for something completely different!"..(no I'm not lying naked on a table in a field, writing this!..Yeah anyway) I'm on about high end, hand painted porcelain from Royal Worcester! I used to do this! hand paint very detailed fruit still life subjects on very expensive hand made porcelain, making it even more expensive! ...And then the gold went on! I am proud and equally sad to say I was one of the very last of an unbroken 250 year line of porcelain Artists employed by the then Royal Worcester factory!..Before it closed..Due to a shit top management.. a even more shit government that at the time disliked manufacturing seeing it as unfashionable and an ignorant media and public! ..Not that I'm bitter! #royalworcesterporcelain #royalworcester #handpainted #handpaint #handpaintedporcelain #historicartifact #history #historical #historic #historicchina #historicporcelain #ceramics #handmade #handmadeceramics #historicceramics #british #britishcraft #englishbonechina #worcester #ware #historicalware #artandcraft #art #fineart #contemporaypainting #contemporypainter #contemporaryart #contemporaryartist #ceramicart

Staffordshire salt-glazed stoneware fossil teapot in the @chipstone_org collection. Blows me away how far ahead of its time this pot is aesthetically (1760). "patterns imitating designs found in nature, survive in slightly larger numbers than do those in creamware and typically are more-or-less globular in profile. Crabstock handles and spouts are typical on stoneware examples as are fossil elements set against stippled grounds...Occasionally, large floral reserves are centered on either side of the body of a pot with a fossil ground." #teapot #stoneware #staffordshire #ceramics #pottery #ceramicart #keramik #陶器 #陶瓷 #도기류 #도예 #keramikk #craft #ceramica #çini #contemporarycraft #poterie #historicceramics

The two things I need every morning to function like a human being? Coffee and my shake! Lucky for me, I can have both at the same time! 😍(and yes, my book shelf is decorated with whiskey jugs and alcohol bottles... I'm a moonshine archaeologist, would you expect any less!?)

Another Staffordshire pierced plate from the Chipstone Foundation (@chipstone_org). 1765 Cream-colored earthenware dish with lead glaze. "Traditionally, wares in these shapes have been thought to date from the 1750s. If, however, Josiah Wedgwood truly invented the first successful green glaze in 1759, then this dish should postdate that time. Nearly identical models also were made in salt-glazed white stoneware." #pottery #ceramics #ceramicart #keramik #陶器 #陶瓷 #도기류 #도예 #keramikk #craft #ceramica #çini #poterie #homedecor #piercedpottery #historicceramics

White tin glazed #earthenware barber's basin in the @chipstone_org collection. 1706 England. "Painted decoration primarily includes a scene with a man with a mallet, a horse, a stable, a fence, and a large tree with sponged foliage. The rim is inscribed "G / I A / 1706" and depicts barber's implements: a large comb, a soap within a sunken soap well, scissors, three hollow circles (perhaps more soap), a square mirror, a wig curler or twine, a razor case or necessaire, and an open razor." #pottery #ceramics #ceramicart #keramik #陶器 #陶瓷 #도기류 #도예 #keramikk #craft #ceramica #handmade #poterie #blueandwhite #delft #historicceramics

Eureka! I just found the Chipstone Foundation's (@chipstone_org) online catalog. Basket ca. 1765, Staffordshire. "Based on shape alone, the date range of the basket and stand could reach from around 1750 to 1770. The circa 1765 date is assigned, however, based on the assumption that they must post-date Josiah Wedgwood's claim to have discovered green glaze in 1759. (He may actually have been refining already existing colored glaze, but documentary evidence for this is scant.)" #ceramics #staffordshire #wedgewood #earthenware #creamware #leadglaze #piercedpottery #pottery #basket #historicceramics
