it's #manifestmonday and my first day returning to social media after a 7-day detox (which was so freeing, by the way!) this is a photo I took of our #pancakebreakfast last Monday morning immediately after declaring my cleanse. the first thing I noticed on my detox was that while I wasn't scrolling through feeds, I was still checking my phone and snapping photos. a lot. being on our devices, for any reason, is hugely distracting and takes us out of the present moment. my intention this week is to be more mindful of how often I am grabbing for my phone to document and/or "check out" of whatever is going on around me. as always, I'm challenging you to do the same! 💚🥕

Finally a small piece of warming ginger. Blend and enjoy 💙

happy Memorial Day everyone! I hope you are enjoying this day wherever you are. It's freakin' hot in Charleston! 😜 I already hit the beach this morning and the sun ☀️ got to me. It's been such a blessing living only 5 miles from the beach 🌊 On another note, I totally failed at making a poached turmeric egg (that's what I get for not following instructions 🙄) but this fried turmeric + black pepper egg was just as good! I love eating eggs with quinoa. It's my favorite! I also paired it with some zucchini and daikon sauté I had left over and topped with broccoli sprouts! 💗💗💗

VEGAN OATMEAL PANCAKES ✨
2 medium very ripe bananas
2 tsp baking powder
✨combine banana and baking powder. Set aside.

2 flax eggs (2 tbsp ground flaxseed + 5 tbsp cold water)
✨must set aside for 3-5 min.

1 tsp vanilla 
2 tbsp almond butter
2 tbsp melted coconut oil
6 tbsp almond mylk ✨ combine all wet ingredients, then add:

1 cup rolled oats (option: GF oats)
1/2 cup whole wheat GF flour
✨Fry on a flat top with coconut oil at around 325 or in your favourite frying pan on med-high heat. 🍓I added fresh strawberries and blueberries with a little organic maple syrup. 🍁

I love these and so easy to make. You can use apple (chopped small) 🍎or banana 🍌. If leaning out / losing body fat I would skip on the banana. Bananas help hold them together nicely.

Water for consistency or organic coconut milk if you prefer 
Stevia for sweetness or Organic 🍯 honey

A fantastic way to spend Sunday! Here's a look at our Eats & Asana Cooking Session yesterday. We had 10 cooks in the kitchen, a bottle of wine, and lots of learning and laughs. Cooking together is one of my favourite parts of this course. Everyone came with an open mind, ready to try new things. We discovered new favourite recipes, cooking techniques we didn't know existed, and strengthened new friendships. Sunday was a success! 😊 #eatsandasana

How could I not post the most decadent non-coffee recipe of all time… It's a rainy day here in Ottawa, which means most of us tend to reach for more than one coffee. This can be a problem especially if you are suffering from adrenal dysfunction or thyroid disease. I went searching for the perfect easy gluten free bread recipe after being frustrated by all of the preservative and junk filled gluten free loafs in the grocery store (gluten free definitely doesn't mean healthy!). I love the simplicity of the ingredients in this recipe and the texture and crunch of the finished product is perfect for sandwiches, avocado toasts, almond butter of even alone alongside a green salad!

{our breakfast topper salad} A salad all 6 of my guys will eat, full of good fat and stretches nicely some loved ingredients. Make the topper (lots of ways to change this up, but bacon. Always have bacon.): pack of cooked, crumbled bacon, chopped hard boiled eggs, chunked avocado, chopped fruit (we used strawberries today, mangos, dragon fruit or apples are all nice), chunked cheese, nuts or seeds (salted pumpkin seeds today, walnuts or pecans are a favorite also) and pour dressing over. Dressing: all the bacon grease, balsamic vinegar in a 2:1 oil/vinegar ratio, big squirt of mustard, squeeze of honey and salt. Shake well and pour over topper. Fill each plate (wide rimmed bowls work best) with the fullest amount of lettuce eat child can enjoy (for some reason 4 year olds can pile it on, but 6, not as much. Age 7 is back to a big pile), then scoop on dressed "topper". Allow hand eating if requested and the pile will disappear ❤️ #oursixsons

Mmm... breakfast. Breaking the fast after a long sleep (hopefully) is very important. Eating a balanced meal with complex carbohydrates, proteins and good quality fat is also important. Protein and fat help to slow the absorption of sugar into the body allowing for more even blood sugar as well as helping you to stay satiated longer. If you are having digestive issues, you may choose to forgo this complex meal and instead have non-starchy vegetables with protein/fat or non-starchy veg together with starchy veg/whole grains. Food combining in this way is easier on digestion but also tends to make you hungry again sooner than later. Hope you have a good start to the week!

My "Treat Yourself" Bowl
I finally went to the gym after a long several months of excuses. It felt great. Getting there is usually the hardest part of the battle for me. 
What are some ways you motivate yourself to get up and get moving?

My post workout bowl was deliciousss packed with rewards (aka chocolate)
Smoothie: 1 🍌, 1 🥑, 1 tbsp of Spirulina powder, Hemp Milk, Aloe Vera Gel & Coconut Goop (previous post)
Toppings: Organic 75% dark 🍫, coconut flakes, gluten-free granola, organic blueberries & chia seeds 
A spirulina smoothie is a perfect post-workout drink due to its high amounts of protein - It has 70% complete protein that is 4x more absorbable than beef!! And packed with way more nutrients!! It's also commonly used amongst athletes for muscle recovery due to its high anti-inflammatory properties. 
Pick up a trial packet of spirulina from your nearest health food store and next time you reach for that chemical filled protein shake, opt for spirulina!

I've never been a fan of packaged breakfast cereal. 😝It's generally high in processed sugar, and ultra refined grains as well as inflammatory oils. This however, has really clean ingredients i.e. no gross oils, or processed/refined sugars and grains. It DOES  have probiotics, hemp protein, spirulina, and chlorella etc.  It's like what I would make in my own kitch! 👍🏼kinda spendy, but great to have on hand for convenience because some days I don't want to cook one more thing. As I was making this hearty bowl of goodness, it made made think back to my days of egg whites and calorie counting. To a time when the number on the scale and working out 6 days a week were everything. I loved protein and loathed fat and carbs. I ate A LOT of chicken and drank A LOT of protein shakes. I would eat "clean" all week and have "cheat days" where a few to many drinks and Doritos were my nourishment. Then I'd wake up vowing to "get back on track". I had a very unhealthy relationship with food and my body.

Fast forward 4 years...I don't know exactly how much I weigh. I look for whole healthy ingredients not calories and I enjoy ice cream and an occasional donut without thinking about how many more calories I can eat or need to burn because of my food choices. I stopped the roller coaster of negative thoughts and unrealistic expectations. I listen to my body. I nourish her with quality whole foods so she doesn't crave sugar or desire "cheat days" all. the. time. I love to cook (I never did, believe it or not). I drink less alcohol. I get better sleep. I exercise as I need to. I play more and worry less. Most importantly I realized there was a world of possibilities when it comes to food, and social media has been a catalyst for so many new connections and discoveries! So, here's to my bowl full of nourishing, filling, colorful and crave worthy goodness. Enjoy your day with your family and friends and be grateful for the beauty that you are and surrounds you, and thankful for the sacrifices so many men & women have made for days like this to be possible. 🇺🇸💜🇺🇸💜.
