The most expensive vegetable in the world......Hop Shoots!
Freshly picked from my garden for free, it is my first time trying them as I only recently found out how special and valuable they are. I have read they taste similar to asparagus or nettles whick means I will keep the cooking simple so we can actually taste them by steaming them lightly then serving with a splash of olive oil . Ill keep you posted on if they are really worth the title of being the most expensive vegetable in the world.
Lunch today included a side of identifying some of yesterday's foraging finds. 🍄 Can't lie, our idea of fun is waay different than it used to be. We might not be as cool anymore, but I like us a hell of a lot more these days.

Shutterbugs, venture on out to #HubleHomestead to take some photos of not just the scenery, but of the buildings themselves! Pictured here is the contrasting #wood on one of our barns! Site is open 10-5 for three more weekends, or explore the park on your own any day of the week.
I have been so insanely busy the last few weeks that I've hardly had time to post anything!!!! This is my precious Nelly soaking up some summer sun from a few weeks back. She has been isolated in her own bachelorette pad ever since I rescued her in back in June. Her broken wing has healed nicely, but I don't think her bad leg will ever be strong enough to roost and hold her own with her rescue sisters. She does well for herself on her own, but I've been a bit worried lately that she's getting lonely only being able to interact with the other hens through a chicken wire fence! Today, I am so happy to unofficially announce that 5 new additions have found their way to A Farm Fresh Life and they will be joining our little rescue family later this week! Another ex-battery, two little silkies, and two polish hens in the local area were in desperate need of a warm place to stay for the winter and I think they might just be a perfect fit for Nelly's new best friends! Official introductions coming later this week!!!! #rescue#rescuehens#chickensofinstagram#chickensaspets#backyardchickens#homestead#homesteading#farm#farmlife#afarmfreshlife#alberta#canada
Loving this stay-cation, but we are definetly looking forward to little more R&R and a little less labor over the next few days. 😥 Beach walk, happy hour, and massage please ✋🏖🍷💆♀️
Today we sunk the new beds down to level and re-buried them with gravel, cleared the rest of the gravel from the driveway and redistributed it around the beds in the front yard, harvested the largest Maui, put some of the excess concrete sand in the girl's run for a nice fresh floor, put excess cobblestones around their coop to replace the funky brick border, and harvested basil which resulted in 144-oz #thebestopesto making party 🌿
As requested, here is a view from the house and also from the driveway. To answer a frequently asked question "What does your house look like from the street? : Our #frontyardgarden is rather special, because we are not on the street at all. Our property is a "flag lot", which used to be an acre until it was split into four in the 70s. Our property is one of the back quarter lots, so we are set away from the street, behind the front house, and only seen and accessed by our private shared drive. #deannafrontyardgardenreno#iloveplants#beachjungalow
My very talented best friends are moving to LA (can't wait for VIP Coachella tbh) I am infinitely proud of both of them and feel so much admiration. Never met two more hard-working people in my life. Grateful for everything both of you have brought to my life. I love you. @tongueincheap @h_ntington I will miss you both more than you know HASHTAG #photoshoot#homestead#homesteadseattle
Man I love cooking with wood! 🔥We've got the fire going to heat the water, which is also heating the house and cooking my lunch. I love the process of splitting the wood and making the fire in the morning... It takes more time but it's so much more satisfying!
For those who don't know, I started the Black Professionals Summit in 2014. The goal was simple: have career professionals come together, exchange information and overtime even the playing field through self-determination. This has been a passion project for my team and I. The funds go to support the logistics of the conference and now Black Professionals Network, a 501C3 organization to carry on more workshops and programs to close the achievement gap. I think this year's speakers really will drive home important topics for the emerging professional. For our rockstars, we paired with Legacy Magazine (@thelegacymag) to bring additional executives who'll share topics about climbing new heights in the 'Executive Lounge'. We have amazing Keynote Speakers like Nona Jones, new Strategic Manager for Communities at Facebook and CEO Michael Finney from Miami-Dade's The Beacon Council. Early bird tickets have been extended until September 22nd, but I just want you to be there so save an additional $10 (excluding student tickets) by using code 'BP2017.' I know together we can achieve more and secure a smoother passage for generations to come in their career and professional development. Hope to see you there!

Pickled purple string beans.
It's that time of year, we spend just as much time harvesting as we do preserving the crop. Today I did another 7 pounds of tomatoes, froze the last of the corn, and Starson is pickling away some peppers, cucumbers, and these pretty purple string beans.
