Devastation on the island of #barbuda - 95% of buildings were destroyed by #hurricaneirma - rebuilding is slow, and there is still no water, electricity or sanitation - one resident said “I am just happy to be alive”

Our latest expedition of discovery taught us many unexpected things, as they usually do. We were reminded, once again, that Mother Nature can never be predicted, exhausted or hidden from. As explorers we were very eager to discover Yosemite National Park. Having planned the trip a year earlier, there would be no knowledge that wildfires would be so devastating in the park that they would close off many regions/entrances and eventually force us out. Ironically, this was just the beginning. Because as we worked our way home we soon realized that our homes were also under siege by a different natural disaster in the form of hurricane Irma. #hurricaneirma#mariposa @california @yosemite_national_park @redwoodsnationalpark @glassbeach #decisions#thisiswhy#justdontgiveafuck#rideordie#imgame#roadtrip#discovery#whocares#letsgo#goanywhere#topdown#dive#diner#ontothenext
This is what happens when the power goes out at dinner time. ☹️ Having major #hurricaneirma flashbacks with our neighborhood dark and the sound of the big generator running at the plant across the street.
Free diapers for families affected by Hurricane Irma! If you were affected by the natural disaster please stop by our booth at the Family Fun Fest in Marathon to pick up diapers for your children. We'll be there this Saturday (January 27th) from 11am to 3pm. A huge thank you to all our donors for making it possible to help families in need who have been affected by Hurricane Irma. #MDBCARES#hurricaneIrma
Half-way home, before Tallahassee, I found out I had 2 weeks to find somewhere else to live.
A hurricane had just flooded my town, so there was zero affordable housing. Plus, I had just spent all my savings evacuating to Pensacola, twice, in the past 11 months.
Because my daughter and I had nowhere to live, I put my 2 weeks notice in at my waitressing job in St. Augustine, and sold almost all of my stuff. I packed my car to the ceiling with everything, me and a four year old could need, while traveling for hours at a time.
We have never lived outside of Florida. And we were on our way to stay with a friend in South Carolina… whom we had never met before.
I had actually came across her facebook profile, about 4 years ago, through a hippie-mama facebook group. I joined this group of all natural, hippie mamas from all over the world, to feel more supported in my decision to not vaccinate Willow. I’m a total black sheep in my family for believing in natural medicines and natural healing. So, this online group was my safe haven. They supported me in my decision and helped me to feel accepted and sane, even though I was a first time single mom with zero supportive parents, who had just escaped an abusive relationship to a brand new town, where I knew noone. That was years ago though, and Angie and I talked quite often. I started to buy elderberry syrup from her, and messaged her random health concerns and questions about my one year old. I even took her online Herbalism class. She would buy crystal necklaces from me and ask about meditation and chakras. Eventually, we planned the Medicine Women’s Retreat for a weekend campout full of yoga and herbalism for women in and around her small town of Florence. And it just so happened to land right after the hurricane mess and us being house-less.
Anyway, since hurricane Irma, it has been such a magical and terrifying experience. Letting go of how I’ve been told my life should look like. Letting go of how I think my life should look like. Letting go of the fear to share what’s been going on in my life. Letting go of my limiting beliefs.
I had been asking (cont. in comments)
