My House in the Woods // Here’s an aerial shot of Hotel Kurobe, the venerable great dame of onsen (hot spring) hotels at Unazuki Onsen, Toyama. Being one of the first hotels in the area, Hotel Kurobe naturally had dibs and chose a fantastic location. The turquoise waters of Kurobe River wind around three sides of the hotel, and the rooms take advantage of the spectacular iews on offer. You can see a small ski area in the hills immediately behind the hotel, which received a bit of early season snow when I visited.
Hotel Kurobe is celebrating 50 years this year. The property is showing its age, but the Japanese have a knack of taking good care of their property, and everything is still in decent condition. The onsen have undergone a refresh, and it was a real treat to be perched right on the edge of the gorge, and have a long soak whilst enjoying the sounds of nature.
Kurobe Gorge’s scenery is at its best in autumn, when the entire valley is ablaze with colour. Sadly I missed this spectacle by a few weeks this time around, but this definitely gives me another reason to make a return visit!
