I hope everyone had a great weekend! I did very little gardening, which was not what I wanted but that's how the cookie crumbled. Yesterday morning we went for a hike in Sam Houston National Forest and for about half a mile we walked through an overgrown trail that was also part of a pipeline, which meant it was full of more herbaceous plants instead of woodland plants. Unfortunately part of those plants were a species of ragweed and it gave me and my husband a horrible reaction (toddler was in the backpack carrier, so he was up above all of the mess!) which meant we took a Benadryl when we got home and slept half the afternoon away! No gardening for us! We did find lots of friendlier wildflowers like Helenium amarum (sneezeweed), Agalinis purpurea (purple false foxglove), Elephantopus carolinianus (elephant's foot), and Solidagos (goldnerods) in that overgrown area. No gardening but we did enjoy some botany at least!
This week I need to thin some seedlings, pull some weeds, and record an episode of the podcast with @thebeginnersgarden ! What did you do this weekend?

Of Asian descent. From the portraits in my gallery people will have noticed that I'm slightly more dark-skinned than your average cloggie. Even though on my father's side my ancestry can be traced back to the Middle Ages, the Diepraam ('Dippramme') name first found in a 13th-century document in which two knightly brothers owning a vast amount of land along the river Rhine near the West-German cities of Xanten and Cleve pledge allegiance to their lord as they go into war, my roots on my mother's side are slightly less Germanic. And truly only slightly so since my mother's father and grandfather were fair-skinned Dutchmen too, originally hailing from the southern province of Brabant before my great-grandfather decided to join the army in the former Dutch colonies. Both married local women, her grandfather to a Chinese girl while my grandfather fell in love with an Indonesian girl. The genes of both these women must be strong though, since even my son, with only a sixteenth portion of Asian blood left in his veins, has a dark appearance about him. In habits and taste, however, I'm distinctly non-Asian, as I have no particular feelings with for instance the oriental section of Leiden's botanical gardens, which I visited on Friday while celebrating my birthday - other than that a pretty picture can be the result. I guess other people with mixed origins experience the same. If you have variety in your roots I'd like to know. #leiden#hortusbotanicusleiden#dutch_connextion#super_holland#igersholland#westcoastgrammers#loves_netherlands#uwn_holland#bestofnetherlands#dernederlanden#instanetherlands#ig_discover_holland#holland_photolovers#thisisholland#wonderful_holland#fiftyshades_of_nature#nature_brilliance#tv_allnature#panasonic#lumixg3#ig_mirrorless
