We are pleased to announce that Manno has fully completed his integration with all the male chimpanzees in his group at Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary. It’s been an eventful year for Manno after his relocation from Duhok Zoo in Iraq.
Immediately upon his arrival at Sweetwaters at the end of November 2016, he was put in quarantine till March 2017. After the completion of his quarantine in March, his integration began by gradually introducing him to the female chimpanzees. This process went swimmingly well and in September, he was introduced to the first male, Niyonkuru. Full integration into a chimpanzee group especially the males can be a challenge for a newly introduced chimpanzees as chimpanzees are territorial. There were a couple of minor setbacks with the males but eventually they came to accept Manno as one of their own and welcomed them into their gang. Manno is now a happy camper at Sweetwaters and loves testing his agility jumping from tree to tree and on piggyback with the females – his favorite activities.
This kind of positive integration can be largely attributed to Manno’s tender age and the valuable experience of the sanctuary staff in terms of their understanding of resident chimpanzee behavior, group dynamics and social structure.
