Admiring the intricate detail on show at the temple complex at Wat Plai Laem
The famed Buddha head in the vines at Wat Phra Mahathat in Ayutthaya. The marker notes that “the head was once part of the sandstone Buddha image, which [somehow] fell off the main body onto the ground. It was gradually trapped into the roots of a constantly growing Bodhi tree. This stone head has a rather flat and wide facial structure with thick eyebrows and big eye lids, straight wide lip, and discernible will lip edge, reflecting the art of Middle Ayutthaya Period, presumably around the mid 1600’s.”
If you want to take a picture with this Buddha head with you also in the picture, you must remember it’s a sacred site. So you will need to kneel or sit cross legged. You can’t be photographed standing up as it’s considered disrespectful to be raised higher than the Buddha. There is a guard on duty to monitor these rules. A father/son were immediately stopped from taking a photo by the guard when the mother attempted to take the photo while they were standing.
In addition, feet are considered “dirty” by the Thai people and should never face the Buddha. It’s also why you always take off your shoes before entering a temple. It’s also why you take your shoes off at many homes or businesses in this county and others that are run by practicing Buddhists. Some interesting facts that I learned recently.
