"Hub on the Hilltop” tells the story of how McGranahan Architects, Bates Technical College and the community leaders of Tacoma, Washington’s Hilltop neighborhood joined together with one goal in mind: to provide an equitable education to all its residents.
With all these recent tragedies in Virginia, is causes us to ask ourselves, how do we contribute to and hopefully prevent these breakdowns in our community as architects? It’s time to revisit the 1996 Defensible Spaces by Oscar Newman for the Institute for Community Design Analysis and HUD to bring forth a continued conversation about these current issues regarding spatial design. The ability for people to rally and gather in masses is greatly reliable on how a space is designed, enabling activities to take place. We strongly believe and are founded by a hungering for justice. Instead of “looking up,” why don’t we look down onto our roots and involvement in justice and our unique position/ability to advocate for harmonized, human living? How do/can architects and designers participate in activism? Any suggestions?
