Build up to the derby : Similarities with the Old Firm Derby (Natives vs Immigrants)
Much of this loyalty has ethnic origins, and hence is harder to dispense for future generations than it would have been if Calcutta was a city with two regular clubs – say Citys and Uniteds. Culturally, Mohun Bagan FC and East Bengal FC, are similar to the two big clubs in Glasgow-Rangers and Celtic. The Calcutta derby, like the old firm derby is a nativist vs immigrant battle of pride, in this case stemming from the influx of immigrants from East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) during the partition of India in 1947. The population displaced, popularly referred to as ‘Bangals’ support East Bengal FC and the natives of present day West Bengal referred to as “Ghotis” support Mohun Bagan FC. They share subtle differences in dialects, food habits and religious rituals. It is this Ghoti vs Bangal race for superiority which holds Indian football in great light to the rest of the world.
Most of the people in our generation have had little to do with immigration or are kids of Native-Immigrant matrimonial unions, but traditions are always mentioned in great fervor, although not strictly followed, either ethnic group feels the need to preserve and protect their ancestral roots and football is a primary channel. Cross-ethnic support isn’t unheard off but isn’t prevalent either.
The Nigerian government has summoned the United States ambassador to explain reported remarks by President Donald Trump that some immigrants from Africa and Haiti come from “shithole” countries, Foreign Minister Geoffrey Onyeama said.
Symington, who is out of Nigeria, was represented by the Deputy Chief of Mission, David Young. A four paragraph statement made available to newsmen in Abuja by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Tope Ade Elias-Fatile, said the government sought clarification on the veracity or otherwise of the substance of the remarks.
The statement read: “The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, today, summoned the US Ambassador to Nigeria to clarify issues regarding the remarks credited to the US President, Mr Donald Trump, in which he was widely quoted in media reports as referring to African countries as “shithole countries” and which he denied.
“The US ambassador, who was out of Nigeria, was represented by Ambassador David J. Young, the Deputy Chief of Mission, Embassy of the United States of America in Abuja. The Minister sought clarification on the veracity or otherwise of the substance of the remarks, stressing that if they were true, they were deeply hurtful, offensive and unacceptable, especially given the very warm and cordial relations that presently exist between the Nigerian Government and the Government of the United States of America.
“Ambassador Young pointed out that there were contradicting accounts by those present as to the veracity or otherwise of the substance of the remarks. He stressed that his government continued to hold the people of Nigeria in very high regard and valued the warm relations and excellent cooperation between the two countries and looked forward to building on this relationship for the mutual benefit of the two countries.” #nigeria#usa#repost#follow#trump#immigrants

Born in 🏴 Wales in 1920, raised in Bristol, my grandmother survived being bombed twice during WWII. Married an American GI, and got her turn to come to the states on the Queen Mary after 18 months with a babe in arms. In this photo I am wearing her dress at her 80th birthday celebration. She is now 97, I am her baby doll and she is my Fifi. #narratives#mixed#immigrants#dreamers#grandma#wales#bristol#granddaughter
WE ALL BELONG and this is sad and should not be happening to someone that has called America home since he was 10 years old. This is only 1 of many situations that is happening too often in our country. @cbsnews
