Last night was an incredible experience and I'm so grateful to @eternalfront and @steelhouse for putting together an amazing event at Sundance Film Festival, raising indigenous voices and providing a platform for us to share our gifts, stories and hearts. The room was packed with powerful performers, artists, filmmakers, speakers, activists, and all kinds of movers and shakers. A night I will never forget, spent with remarkable people! #eternalfront #steelhouse #sundancefilmfestival #singersongwriter #ukulele #acoustic #indigenousvoices #respect #indigenousresistance #MMIW #honorus #wearemedicine

An evening with 4 generations of a Torres Strait Island family was a truly special theatrical experience as part of the Sydney Festival.
Their patriarch became a linguist, reclaimed their language from missionaries and established a cultural centre in an (unsuccessful) attempt to have their cultural artefacts returned from Europe.
The joy and the pain in their faces as they remembered family members and told of their efforts to retain and pass down cultural traditions will stay with me for a long while.

This is how indigenous voices should be heard and understood. With proper funding, in a high profile atmosphere, with eager ears and raucous applause. #mynameisjimi #belvoirtheatre #sydneyfestival #torresstrait #indigenous #indigenousvoices #mabuiagisland #wagadagam #australia #sydney #oz #theatre #art #culture #ancestry #heritage #traditions #celebration #independenttheatre

The powerful, devastating true story of seven Indigenous high school students who died hundreds of miles away from their families, after being forced to leave home and live in an unwelcoming city. It was seven years after the discover of the first body that an inquest began. An eye opening look at Canada’s long history and struggle with human rights violations against Indigenous communities. This is a must read for non-fiction lovers, social justice seekers, and human rights advocates.

I have heard that this is an incredibly powerful book. Clearing the Plains is a MUST READ for any Canadians who want to learn more about the Canadian Government’s history of mistreatment and genocide against the Indigenous Peoples who lived here before us. In a year when people have been celebrating 150 years of colonization, and in a time when reconciliation is becoming more and more talked about - reading and learning more about (our) history is a small (but important) step.

I am super duper excited to read Tommy Pico’s “Nature Poem”. Following a young, queer, ‘American Indian’ poet - who just can’t bring himself to write a ‘nature poem’, finding it stereotypical, cliche, and reductive. This gorgeous poem/prose tackles White, colonial ideas and stereotypes, while exploring sexuality, disenfranchisement, and coming of age. This is one of the books I’m most excited to read!

A powerful, dark, and funny story about a Cree woman, finding herself, & finding her strength. This book is a little more literary, very Canadian, & (I’ve heard) very good! Described as “part road trip, part dream quest, and part travelogue”, this has been on my “to read” list for a while, and I can’t wait to dig in! Have any of you read it? I would love to hear what you think!

"Our stories have the power to keep our knowledge alive for future generations.” - Flor Tangoy, Siona Nation.

For hundreds of years, elders in indigenous communities have shared their stories, their memories and their histories with their children, grandchildren and neighbors. Without written languages, the Secoya, Waorani, Siona and Kofan cultures depended on stories and the generational bonds created through oral tradition.
As colonization, deforestation and acculturation creep deeper and deeper into the indigenous ways of life in the Amazon, that living memory is harder and harder to transfer from generation to generation.

Now more than ever, indigenous stories must be told, passed down to future generations and also shared with the outside world. We believe that indigenous communities must tell their own stories, so we are training indigenous youth to use film, photography and other storytelling techniques to transmit the knowledge and histories of their ancestors within their communities while creating films that allow those who live outside of the Amazon to understand their changing realities.

Only thanks that I give for this day is for my family and friends. I don't celebrate the day, especially with the mass genocide of the indigenous people of this land by these so-called "founding fathers" of this nation. We are still here... "First Thanksgiving in Neverland".

I don’t celebrate genocide. #GivingThanks is one thing and so is having a nice meal with loved ones but that’s not what “Thanksgiving” was founded on nor what it’s about. How about you learn your history before mindlessly participating in popular belief. #IndigenousVoices #NativeAmeranHeritageMonth #GivingThanksDay #MyAncestors Blood matters (2)

With loved ones today, with plenty of food, and naturally there's a little me-time on the phone.
🍁
It's a very small action, but maybe the right size for a day that feels restful - seeking out groups to amplify on instagram by following and liking their posts.
🍁
Seeing their work in my feed is a reminder to learn more about them, and seek out volunteer opportunities.
And in a medium of 'performing one's best life', I find it a vital perspective-check to include reminders about those using the medium to do & share selfless good.
And especially on this complicated holiday, to listen for the voices for whom the history of this day is one of violence.

Excerpt from lyrics of “What makes the red man red”
***
“Tell me why you think the red man is red
Stained with the blood from the land you bled
Tell me why you think the red man is dead
With a fake headdress on your head
Tell me what you know about thousands of Nations
Displaced and confined to concentration camps called reservations
We died for the birth of your nation.”

“Anishinaabe rapper Tall Paul is originally from Leech Lake, Minnesota, however he grew up in the city of Minneapolis which meant not having connection to his identity as an Anishinaabe person. Tall Paul joined Indigenous Waves this week to talk about the themes in his music including growing up in the city, being removed from language, culture and tradition and reconnecting to his identity through education and music. His track “Prayers in a Song” is the result of reconnecting to Anishinaabemowin through school, and Tall Paul shares the story of how that came to be.” •
