A GROUP of schoolgirls from Nigeria have figured out a way to use a litre of urine as fuel to get six hours of electricity from their generator.
Fourteen-year-olds Duro-Aina Adebola, Akindele Abiola, and Faleke Oluwatoyin, and 15-year-old Bello Eniola displayed their invention this week at Maker Faire Africa in Lagos, Nigeria, an annual event meant to showcase ingenuity.
Urine is put into an electrolytic cell, which separates out the hydrogen. The hydrogen goes into a water filter for purification, and then into a gas cylinder, which looks similar to the kind used for outdoor barbecue grills.
The gas cylinder pushes the filtered hydrogen into another cylinder that contains liquid borax, in order to remove moisture from the gas. Borax is a natural mineral, commonly used in laundry detergent.
The hydrogen is pushed into a power generator in the final step of the process.
On this day, we give thanks to the pioneers of the paving industry. It's truly amazing how far asphalt paving has come since its origination. The first bituminous mixtures produced in the U.S. were used for roads, crosswalks and even sidewalks in the late 1860's. In 1870, a Belgian chemist named Edmund J. DeSmelt laid the first true asphalt pavement in this country.
Exercise used to feel like a chore. Like it was this thing you felt you should do even though you couldn’t be bothered.
But now it’s like a hobby. Something I look forward to. I started buying books to study new techniques and became interested in the relationship between athletics and music and how they are intertwined.
I learned the same process that writers, musicians and artists experience and applied it to physical development which transformed what used to be a chore into an enjoyable experience.
I use this every time I train now. #electronicmusic does play a big part in it though. I don’t think it would work without it.
#music is like the tool that enables focus. In ear bud headphones specifically have to be worn to block out any outside noise to eliminate distractions.
This allows you to focus on something else, like the music, which can make you forget that your even training.
If I can hear myself breathing, it won’t work. That’s a distraction and it throws you off. It’s key to not hear anything at all but music and with that this works, everytime!
It makes you feel happier, more productive, stronger, faster, you have more energy, which can then be transferred into your work, which then also helps you to be more creative.
Here is the toolkit. Nine main elements that make it happen. Have fun in your next experiment.
