We had to share another great Hokkaido artist visiting Chicago to exhibit their work with the Obihiro Exhibition! This is Akemi Kai's "Lillith". This almost life-sized ball jointed doll recalls a long history of doll creation over the world, including Japan of course. These contemporary dolls are often influenced and influence pop culture and Japanese animation. Has anyone seen the anime or read the manga, "Another"? Our office recommends it to learn more about the craft of ball jointed dolls, and their sometimes fantastical interpretations! 🎎
To all you decorative art lovers out there, today we bring to you a stunning compilation of all the major ornamental arts of Japan! Japan's long history of exquisite ornamentation and decorative art making is world-renowned, in large part due to the 19th century explosion in Europe over these fascinating art pieces from the Far East. Japonisme/Japonaiserie, the term coined by the French referring to the style and influence of Japanese art in the West, swept up the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists, the most famous being Manet, Monet, Degas, and Van Gogh, whose art reflected their intense fascination with Japanese aesthetics. This two-part volume is an extensive survey into the major forms of Japanese decorative arts, written in 1882 by British author George Ashdown Audsley. It is filled to the brim with beautiful black and white and color plates detailing the fine workmanship of Japanese artisans. Volume 1 covers a sweeping range of ornamentation, from Drawing, Painting, Engraving, and Printing to Embroidery and Textile Fabrics to Lacquer. No love of decorative arts is complete without diving into the world of Japanese ornamentation!
